my weight wasnt recorded at my nuchal scan, how much does this affect result?

Midwife at hosp has just called (scared life outta me having said they would only call with bad news!) and said my weight wasnt recorded last week at my nuchal scan (even though they weighed me) and they need this to calculate the results. I dont have any scales at home so couldnt reliably tell her and she seemed reluctant to go on my best guess. Upshot is I have to go and find some scales and they are going to call me tomorrow. Question is does my weight affect the results a lot? I know its easily within normal range, even slightly low, and she said the results looked 'nice and normal' but needed the weight to make sure....? Anyone know? Thanks

I didn't have mine checked when I had my scan/blood tests. Hmm Surely if anything, they'd need your pre-pregnancy BMI, as weighing you at 10 weeks isn't an indicator of how your baby is doing, just how much you're putting on in pregnancy.

I know I wondered the same...maybe they compare my weight at my booking in appt to now...? Have no idea but apparently its of great importance!!?? thanks anyway

I am now 38 weeks and have not been weighed once during my pregnancy! If its really that important then my MW isnt doing something she should!

I had my weight taken at my nuchal scan as it was needed for the programme to run the risk calculation. But that was for current pregnancy, it didn't happen with the previous 3. I guess it may depend on which system your health authority uses.

Weight makes a difference because the heavier you are the higher your blood volume, which affects how dilute the substances that they are measuring in your blood. So what is considered 'normal' will differ depending on the weight of the mother.

I wasn't weighed at my nuchal scan. Presume they just used the weight from the booking appointment 4 weeks earlier

MissWooWoo · 06/09/2010 18:15

I was never weighed with dd - wonder if it is to do with the health authority? I'm in London

Jacksmybaby · 06/09/2010 18:29

Same here: I wasn't weighed at my nuchal scan either. I guess they must have used the weight from my booking in apptmt 3 weeks earlier.

I wasnt weighed at any time during pregnancy at all.

GoldenKippers · 06/09/2010 18:39

I was weighed at mine and recorded as 57kg when I think I was about 55kg at the time - I had an extremely full bladder and was wearing heavy cycling shoes with metal cleats. Hopefully that won't affect the results too much though!

Thanks for all your responses, I'm in nw london misswoowoo, but they have only just started doing the nuchal scanning at my hospital in the past 6 weeks. Maybe its just part of the new procedure.....???

They need your weight for the blood test part - the heavier you are the higher one of the levels will be in your result, I forget which one, so they need to factor in your weight for that one to see whether your level is elevated relative to maternal weight or not. If the only downs screening you have had is a nuchal scan they don't need your weight. If you have a blood test, they should have a weight for that.

lainey1981 · 07/09/2010 08:56

I was weighed at my nuchal scan too.
I'm at Kings - where they seem to weigh you before you are allowed to fart!

Most thrilling was at my 20 week scan, being made to stand on some odd looking scales holding something in my hand - little did i know that it was doing a full body scan measuring my muscle tone, body fat percentage and suggesting a target weight for me - wouldn't mind but they put my height wrong (put me down as 4 inches shorter than i was)
slightly traumatic seing those numbers half way through your pregnancy!

I had a go at the poor student sonographer saying i failed to see what scanning my body had to do with my scan

apparently to calculate the risk of pre-term delivery - bl00dy students.

don't know bootus I am in se london and had the nuchal but never ever weighed - how odd if it has some bearing on the results? They did ask me my weight at my booking in session with the mw (truth dutifully told) but that's hardly scientific is it?

warthog · 07/09/2010 09:29

i have never been weighed through both of my pregnancies and have been under the care of an ob.
