My friend had an 11lb 12 oz baby last time and had him naturally. She is pregnant again but they are predicting that this one is going to be bigger.

I should think the fact she HAS successfully delivered a large baby before would be a good indication that she will again.

I laboured for over 40 hours with DS (first baby) - in the end he simply wasn't coming (my cervix swelled and so I became less dilated). He was 12lb 12oz. When he was born it was clear he never would have fitted through my pelvis - there was an indented ring around his head where he had been 'stuck' and his left ear had grown downwards. And I'm not small, myself being 6ft.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 05/09/2010 15:40

DH was 13lb, and MIL delivered naturally.

daisystone · 05/09/2010 16:20

Shit. I am panicking about having a massive baby. My bump is huge already and I have 10 week left to go.

Can they tell weight/size or baby before delivery and if it seems very large, do you get the option of having a Caesarean?

I really do want to avoid forceps if at all possible.

oggybags · 05/09/2010 16:42

my friend had a 10lber via cs 2 weeks early as the hospital gave her the option, they were worried if she went full term the baby would be to big and have issues, so would they give her a choice if theyre predicting BIG things!

ib · 05/09/2010 16:46

My sis. Ist child, no tears. Home water birth.

Second was predicted to be even bigger but was, in fact, smaller.

seasister · 05/09/2010 16:51

This is an ignorant first timer question - but how do they tell the most up to date head circumference before birth? And if the baby looks like it's going to be big, head and weight wise, can you squeal for a CS? I'm really small and very nervous about this!

PYT · 05/09/2010 16:51

My dad was 13 lbs and gran had him vaginally. He was her ninth child, though, and she had him 11 months after having twins.

daisystone · 05/09/2010 16:57

seasister - me too! See my post above.

Does anyone have any insider info on this?

ThatDamnDog · 05/09/2010 17:01

My cousin had an 11lb 7oz baby. I don't know the details but I gather it was a pretty horrific experience and she wasn't even able to drive for a couple of months and was in and out of hospital afterwards. Should possibly have been a CS.

We get growth scans here - around 34 weeks - and the baby's weight is marked as a centile. They measure abdominal circumference, head circumference and femur length to predict weight. They are not accurate as far as I know. DS was predicted to be huge - he was 8lb 3oz 2 days short of term.

rimsky · 05/09/2010 17:54

Sorry to hijack baby weight thread, but my baby's head circumference was 31.1cm at my 36 week scan, is that big or small? Sounds big to me!

ib · 05/09/2010 19:08

They don't know.

They guesstimate based on a scan.

They get it wrong.

hidetheelephant · 06/09/2010 12:43

ib How heavy was your sister's first?

DS2 was 11lb 3oz - i had him naturally having laboured in water with gas in air. Labour was only 2.5 hours and although I tore, he came out without forceps or anything.

As someone else said, it depends on the size of the head and shoulders rather than the weight. DS2 was 62cm long so was in proportion and not particularly chubby.

EdgarAllInPink · 06/09/2010 13:04

my grandad was 13 lbs. as it was 1911, not by c-section...

snorkie · 06/09/2010 13:41

my SIL's first was 12lb 2oz, born naturally but not easily and made the local papers. The next two were both induced early to avoid them being too big - both were still large, but not that large. Makes my 6lbers seem like shrimps.

ib · 06/09/2010 15:36

about 12 lbs. Not sure exactly, could have been an oz or two under (I was there, but not that focussed on the exact weight beyond huge).

cowboylover · 09/09/2010 20:14

My DH was 11lb 8oz and MIL gave birth in 4 hours no drugs and no tearing! She said she just pushed when she was told to and stopped when they didnt!

I was 8lb 6oz so worried what size ours will be! Shock

clareanna · 09/09/2010 22:45

I had a scan for a low lying placenta at 36 weeks and was told ds was likely to be 9lbs based on scan. He was actually 7lb 10oz so scan was not accurate so I don't think there is any way really to predict. If forceps are the safest way to deliver your baby then at the time you get to the stage where they recommend them you really would do anything to help your baby be born safely.
