Cot on an outside wall?

Hi. I've read that ideally you wouldn't have a cot alongside an outside wall. Does it really matter though? I could organise the room so that I didn't but it would look a bit odd but would be fine. Surely as there is no damp and it is a warm house, it doesn't matter......does it??

i don't think it matters at all, no! like you say, as long as you don't have some kind of damp problem or anything

I thought it was just that you don't want the cot under a window/near the curtains? Never heard the thing about the outside wall...

EmmieA · 03/09/2010 21:08

Why not near curtains?

I've never heard this ...I was such a negligent mother, its a wonder any of mine survived at all

I have never heard this. DD is now 2, and has been by the outside wall since she was 5 months. Doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects!

RegeenaPhalangee · 03/09/2010 21:10

I've never heard of this one and I worried about everything!

curtains because you don't want the baby to yank them down or strangle themselves on a cord etc.

outside wall thing is possibly from Ye Infante Moste Contente or similar book from when we all lived in caves and wattle and daub dwellings

so unless you are posting from the dark ages you can ignore that

melpomene · 03/09/2010 21:18

As long as you don't do this, it should be all right.

My dc's cot had one end against the outside wall and under the window. They are fine.

I am waiting for DD to yank the curtains down though as she seems a little too interested in them.

I thought the only big thing was away from a radiator.

We had DS's cot on an outside wall for a while, and in winter we had to cover the side of the cot as the wall got so cold.

It's not done him a fat lot of harm though.

If you live in a detached house, then two walls in every room are probably on the outside.

I guess this relates to damp, and damp(mould?) pores and it being more likely on an out side wall.

We had no choice. Cot was on outside wall, underneath the window. We lived in a 1 bed flat (were evicted from our nice 2 bed when I was 5 months). MW did comment on the cot being so near the window but we had no choice. DS did sleep in the moses basket while we were there anyway so we could move that.

I think it is because of any draft that they could feel.
