Hi there

I am new to mums net and recently found out I am pregnant :)
I am a little bit worried though and would be very grateful if anyone could give me advice to reassure me.
I used a hair remover on my upper lip once and have just found out that this can be harmful. Does anyone know if this is true and if so would using it once at 6 weeks pregnant cause any major harm?

I of course won't use it again but I am just very anxious that I may have unwittingly caused harm and am so upset at this.
I am grateful to anyone who can give me their advice/experience in this area.

I'm sure it would be absolutely fine - people have done a lot worse before realising they are up the duff, don't beat yourself up about it - there's plenty of other stuff to beat yourself up about and it only gets worse Smile Was kind of hoping to veet the old lady garden before delivery, but no idea if its safe or not, or more to the point, whether I could reach it - I may have to fashion an applicator from a shoe horn or something, my mum's got a really long one for old people!! hair removal creams are safe - who told you otherwise?

Are you using something particularly strong and unusual?

Thank you for getting back to me on this. This is my first pregnancy so I think I'm being maybe just extra paranoid!
It's just a Boots own label and doesn't really smell at all. I just read an article in the press which said that hair removal creams should not be used at all in pregnancy.
Perhaps I should stop reading articles in the press Wink
Take care both and thanks for your responses.

Congratulations Jennifer and don't worry about the paranoia.... it just gets worse!!! Get used to worrying about anything and EVERYTHING, even when ppl tell you not to... that's what MN is here for, to stop you going mad! Grin

I use that boots own stuff, and am pretty sure it's fine!

In fact, waxing your upper lip would probably cause you pain and some chemical reaction which would get through to your baby and upset it. Grin

Welcome to the world of mothering paranoia you previously never knew existed!

goodlifemummy loool. gosh i know what women mean when they say they cant see below. With my first two kids my bump wasnt so big i could still see below. But with third one, i now understand what you women have suffered.

i still use the cream with the help of a swivel mirror. it helps a little but mostly done blindfold method. long as the cream is on external regions there should be no harm. i've used it with all 3 pregnancies now. i didn't realise there was a danger...

i have read that epilators shouldn't be used later on in pregnancy. But why not? they're used on the legs. Whats the theory the vibrations from the epilator will get labour going? Anyone know?

Maybe i should then ditch my electric toothbrush incase that jolts me into labour huh...?

Seriouisly, hair removal creams are fine!

A while back a lot of things were more dangerous: creams, hair dyes, fake tan etc but products have moved on and formulations have changed.

If you speak to any experienced gynae doctor/midwife/expert in the field, they well tell you that you don't have to worry.

Just don't eat the stuff.... or put it on your genitals! The skin around the genitals is fine though.

japhrimel · 04/09/2010 13:26

They're fine - don't worry. I've been avoiding using them because my skin is more sensitive, but that's a different issue.

Often with skin products - depilatories, fake tan, etc - it's advised not use them because your skin may react badly and some people translate this into them being unsafe which isn't the case.

mewbilly · 04/09/2010 18:41

Does anyone know if the same applies to cream bleach?
Being cursed with dark hair I do rely upon my regular Jolen session to look human but haven't used it since I found out I was pregnant.
Any enlightenment (not intended pun!) on this would be greatly appreciated.

I am so happy that I have joined Mums Net. I have all this stuff going around in my head and haven't been able to talk to anyone as it's still so early on.
It's great to get such a good response from so many supportive and lovely people. THANK YOU so much Grin
I won't be afraid of using the cream now lol!!!!

It's easy to feel paranoid. During my first trimester I had sworn off nail polish, fake tan and even my flippin Avon facewash, convinced they were all going to harm my unborn baby. Which is not to say they wouldn't in large amounts, but only if I lived in a nail bar 24/7, inhaling fumes and getting spray tans all day long whilst applying prescription-strength acne cream to my face.

I am now 16 weeks and have realised (perhaps after too much research) that you can type just about anything into Google and it will be bad for you during pregnancy. It's ridiculous some of the scaremongering that goes on. So now I am much more relaxed, and realise that as long as I apply common sense and don't overdo anything I will be fine.

goodlifemummy · 06/09/2010 21:36

manicmum What on earth are you doing with your electric toothbrush that it might start labour off??......Let me know if it works - need to get my baby out by 19th December! Grin
