Eclampsia after birth

I suffered from pre-eclampsia a week before my son was born which then resulted in eclampsia after the birth when i suffered a seizure 12 hours after delivery.
My son is now 8 years old and we are now trying for our second baby.
I am concerned by the thought of what may happen throughout another pregnancy and whether i will suffer from pre-eclampsia or even eclampsia next time and if i did how serious it could be.
We were told after i had my son by the consultant that there would be a 20% chance of suffering this again in another pregnancy which i suppose isn't that high, but on the other hand there is only a small percentage of women each year that suffer eclamptic fits (after birth) so i suppose it could happen and i'm thinking i will have these worries all the way through pregnancy.

It would be great to hear from anyone who suffered the same problems as myself in there first pregnancy and then went on to have another baby, and whether they suffered pre-eclampsia/eclampsia again?

Thanx x

Hiya,

My son is also 8 years old and when he was born at 31 weeks I had an eclamptic fit the day her was born and I was very poorly, stroke/cerebal odeoma and in a coma for a few days. We both are healthy and fine now.

I had my second son (with a new partner) 3 years ago and other than bleeds early on, he was born a healthy 7lb 1 at 38 weeks by elective section, no sign of pre-eclampsia that time. I was monitered very closely and for my own piece of mind I bought my own BP moniter which I got into th habit of using from early on. I did have aspirin and clexane injections this time round but this was down to a clotting disorder called factor v leiden. (which could also have been a factor is Pre-E.

I am now pregnant again with number 3! They are still watching me closely.

HTH

Hi Julezboo thanks for your reply.

Glad to hear everything went well for you on your second pregnancy and hopefully the same for your 3rd!

I have heard that even thou you can suffer pre-eclampsia/eclampsia with your first baby having your second child with a new partner like yourself, can mean there is less of a chance of you suffering again with these problems, whether that is right or not i dont know!
I am married and this pregnancy would be same father as my first and
all tho my son was born perfectly healthy and i started to pick up after a few days but had no memory of what happened, it was very scary for my husband and he was told at the time it could have been alot worse which always puts the worry in the back of his mind of what could happen!

xx

I think my DH could relate. He lives on edge throughout the whole of our prgnancies. This will be ourlast one. 3 is enough and this time round I am suffering with hyperemesis as well!

My son too was perfectly healthy, just too small, he weighed 2lb and suffered IUGR as a result of the placenta shutting down. My DH wasnt around when my eldest was born. They did tell me the chances of getting pre eclampsia with my new partner was the same as if I was having my first baby. We were all fine though!

I didn't have an eclamptic fit, but did have pre eclampsia from 32 weeks until DS was induced at 38 weeks.
My DD was born two years later at 37 weeks with no problems, although the day before she was born I had my weekly check up with midwife and my blood pressure had started to creep up.
I had also heard that pre eclampsia could happen again with a new partner, but also if there is a 7 year gap, then the mother is treated like a first time mother again.

Thanks Julezboo & Bruffin its nice to hear that on both occasions you both went through healthy second pregnancies, fingers crossed me 2 (that is once i am pregnant).

There was only 1 gud thing about the whole labour experience i couldn't remember hardly anything about the birth or the pain, which was great but i suppose i'll pay 4 it the next time and remember the whole damn thing!!

I suppose when the time comes i'll take every day as it comes and at least i know what to expect and should be more closely monitored and hopefully everything will be fine! xx
