hi,

I'm slipping into the 'crisps' and 'chocolate' trap, and being a normally healthy eater I'm running out of ideas for healthy snacks. I eat fruit, sometimes dips and crudites, anyone got any other ideas- I'm especially stumped for healthy savoury snacks!

I'm lacking calcium in my diet so low fat cheese and water crackers has been a nice one for me. I like to have those with dried apricots.
I also love chocolate though and the women I work with are constantly waving chocolate biscuits under my nose which is very hard to resist!!

Those Ryvita with pumpkin seeds? They can be eaten on their own.

Or dried fruit, a lot more fun than proper fruit and you get that 'sweetie' effect if you have a bag of dried strawberries etc.

When craving chocolate (i.e. every day) I drink an Options hot chocolate. Not healthy, but low calorie which means you can load up on the healthier stuff.

And sometimes I have a yoghurt with some fruit jam, or make a yoghurt/fruit smoothie.

Nuts, especially almonds. Mmmmm!

big cheese recommendation from me. im surprised i havent turned into a babybel!!

fragola · 01/09/2010 12:56

Wensleydale with cranberries - ticks both the cheesy and the sweet boxes. I probably shouldn't be scoffing it by the block though...

Wombat33 · 01/09/2010 13:01

I second the babybel recommendation for savoury snacks. Oatcakes are also tasty, with or without cheese and chutney :) On the dried fruit front - I am getting addicted to dried mango, or if you can splash out a bit, M&S semi-dried mango - yummy!!

Rice cakes, crackers or wholegrain toast with houmous. Wholegrain toast with marmite or cheese. Yoghurt and fruit. Cereal/baked fruit bars.

lurcherlover · 01/09/2010 14:07

Toast and peanut butter is my current fave. Also love cheese on crackers (will admit to Laughing Cow being a guilty pleasure...)

Miffster · 01/09/2010 14:46

I have lots of bags of nuts. Almonds, walnuts, cashews and mixed nuts. Dried apricots or prunes (help with constipation as well). Slices of Soreen malt loaf with Philadelphia or cheddar. Slices of apple spread with peanut butter or cashew nut butter. Brown pitta bread dipped in tzatziki/hummus/taramsalata. Bowl of muesli. Hard boiled egg. I also make or buy fresh soup and keep some in the work fridge. Edaname beans tossed in chilli oil.

I've stopped eating proper food and some days I mostly live on the above, especially when DH works late and I can't be bothered to cook at night.

Mini Babybel Lights are great, having a bag of them in the fridge is a good low calorie/ fat snack. I also second dried apricots or mango- feels much more like a satisfying sweet snack than fresh fruit. I find bananas are good for a healthy sweet tooth fix too.

Quite often I love a bowl of peach and apricot Special K as a good snack- I'm nearly 37 weeks and really ravenous now.

Hovis crackers have a lot of flavour- spreading some of them with low fat cream cheese would be good. Yoghurts are also really good- I've found that Activia Peaches & Cream ones are delish and feel like an indulgent dessert when actually they're good for your tummy.

Babybel lights! They have been my only craving (Im calling it that but its just an excuse to eat extra)

edeluna · 01/09/2010 20:59

A few of my current faves:

savoury Japanese rice crackers

Rice cakes with nut butter and banana (pecan butter if you really feel like splurging!)

Roasted almonds (I carry a small container of these with me at all times now bc hunger just totally sneaks up on me and I get absolutely desperate.)

SaraL77 · 03/09/2010 10:08

thanks for all your suggestions! mm I love babybel and only discovered them with this pregnancy. Also, almonds a good idea- I normally only like nuts roasted and salted (not very healthy I know) but will try the natural ones.

I have some almond nut butter in the back of the cupboard somewhere but it's not quite as yummy as peanutbutter (at the front of the cupboard ;-)

you lot are so healthy ;-) I'll have to start sharing dried apricots with DS, he normally gobbles the lot

If you're craving chocolate but want something healthier, I've been loving Nakd bars- they're raw bars of blended fruit n nuts, the cocoa, cocoa-orange ones are the best :)

ReshapeWhileDamp · 03/09/2010 11:32

I'm practically inhaling those Fincrips - rye crispbread. They're lovely.

BUt am also eating everything else in the house. Blush

I'd stick to dried fruit, as it's good for fibre, iron and slow energy release, low-fat cheese, cottage cheese, carrot sticks, nuts, ham. (Must follow my own advice!)

krispbreads with philly and grapes :)
