Hiya Ladies

Just hoping someone might be able to share to some good tips with me, I'm currently 30 weeks and the sleeping lark is becoming more of a problem cos at night my hips and the muscles just below them give me hell when I'm lying on them!

I'm now trying to avoid sleeping on my back so I'm turning over and over like a rasher of bacon ! Confused I have a memory foam mattress topper on my bed, plus numerous pillows and was going to try putting a winter duvet folded up under there too. Yikes does anyone else have the same trouble? what with that and the toilet trips bedtime is an olympic event!

Cheers

Pillow under bump and between knees if not already. Visit your go and ask him to check for bursitis (so?). Hope you get some sleep soon.

LilRedWG · 31/08/2010 19:38

That was meant to be (so?)

mum2oneloudbaby · 31/08/2010 19:39

In addition to LilRed I also like a pillow at the small of my back to prop me up. I rest on it to stop me sleeping on my back and it also helps me stay on my left to ease my reflux.

I get this, for me it's part of PGP.

Am sleeping on folded winter duvet, with pillow between knees, and turning over from one side to the other every hour or so (which is a right production because I literally have to hold my knees together as I turn to avoid a lot of pain). It sucks.
Some people I know have resorted to sleeping propped up on sofa in late pg. I'm avoiding that because baby is OP and that won't help him/her shift to a better position, but it might work for you?

LilRedWG · 31/08/2010 19:41

Good God - I can't spell or type. I meant (sp?)

daisystone · 31/08/2010 19:42

I went to a back and pelvis support group at the hospital today.

The physio recommended the duvet trick. Fold a double duvet in half and lay it on your side of the bed and sleep on that so that your hip is cushioned. Pillow length ways between the knees.

I am going to try that myself tonight although my problem is my back and not my hip.

MamaFlump2be · 31/08/2010 19:53

Thanks Ladies, for those tips I'm at the stage where I'll try anything! I do have a pillow inbetween my knees, was going to do the cushion thing under my bump..but wait for this...I was too scared that I would squash the baby..lol! It turns you into such a worrier doesnt it? I even have had a dream that I turned onto my front one night and squashed it (not that I've ever been able sleep in this position due to the size of my puppies!). I even tried a blow up air mattress last week when we had visitors, but it kept deflating! Blush
I was thinking of taking a wheat heat pack to bed to try and place it on the hip but thought it maybe too close to bump! Confused

Side sleeper pillow...and get a physio referral.

daisystone · 31/08/2010 19:59

Yeah if you are in pain do self-refer to the hospital for a physio appointment.

justanuthermanicmumsday · 31/08/2010 20:29

mama flump you might have spd, i had it with my previous 2, and now with the 3rd one on its way, it's at it's worst. Since you're 30 wks still time to get into physio, speak to your midwife. Don't suffer like me.

just like user "puddock", i have a duvet folded in half under me, for more support. i have a pillow between my legs but there is still a lot of pain, just not as much if a pillow is used. Worst thing about pillow have to keep legs together all night, so when i wake up i have muscle cramps in my calves.

i think you said you were on a foam mattress? well i don't sleep on a matress, since i got back problems with first child i threw it out, im on a hard bed lol. But i went to visit my dad and they had a really firm new mattress, i had brilliant sleep almost no pain. If you have a regular firm matttress rather than foam one try it, may help.

But main thing ask for physio, painkillers i hope you are feeling better soon, i wouldn't wish my pain on anyone.

Shaz10 · 31/08/2010 20:34

Agree about sleeping on a duvet.

MamaFlump2be · 31/08/2010 21:43

Thankyou Ladies, I really appreciate that x

Maybe try a pregnancy yoga DVD? I get sore hips like you describe but I tried out pregnancy yoga and it really helped ease the stiffness in my hips and I got a much better nights sleep.

MadameG · 01/09/2010 15:33

I have the same night time issues and pain- its hell. I asked the midwife the other day and she said I probably have SPD, but I'm full term on Sat so its a bit late for further treatment.

I do the turning like a rasher of bacon thing too, its horrid. I can't wait to have my normal body back and just snuggle up with no issues! I have a pillow between my knees and also one under my feet, but I must admit, I still have to toss and turn and get pain.

I was told that swimming really helps with this issue, as it helps to loosen up your body and makes everything easier. Bit late for me but probably a good tip for anyone with more time to go.

japhrimel · 01/09/2010 15:34

Swimming is great as you can exercise and so strengthen the muscles needed for support without putting weight on your pelvis.

You need to take it easy and avoid breast-stroke legs though.

TwistAndShout · 01/09/2010 17:37

Be careful with swimming as it's possible to do more damage as you can't feel how hard you're pushing yourself till you've got out.

Definitely no breast stroke.

Shaz10 · 01/09/2010 18:55

What's wrong with breast stroke? :)

Bumperlicious · 01/09/2010 19:08

Oh god, many sympathies, I don't sleep between the hours of 3 and 6am and toss and turn the rest of the time (am 37 weeks and basically haven't slept in 8 months!)

Could the aching hips be piriformis syndrome? I think I've had this and a deep tissue massage from a therapist helped to some extent (though not completely :()

Breast stroke is not really a problem unless you have SPD in which case it can really aggravate it.

MamaFlump2be · 01/09/2010 20:38

I do aqua natal classes which is lovely but..awful when ya have to get out, as its like a big thud..lol
I was thinking about a massage too so I do get a wee bit of relief when they have been rubbed. I added the extra winter duvet today so Im hoping tonight might be a bit more spongey! I'm trying not to turn into a hyperchondriac Confused x
