Hi,

I just got back from my 34 week appointment. Up until now I have only been weighed at my very first appointment (I was 9 weeks then) and not since. Today I saw the Dr as the midwife was fully booked, he asked me if my weight gain has been steady and I said that as far as I know it has, but I have not weighed myself. So he weighed me and I have put on 2 and a half stone roughly. I asked if this was OK, he just said "mmmm" , then when I asked if he thought I had put too much on or not enough, he said perhaps a little too much.......

Does this seem a lot to you? I am a little upset as I really felt/feel that I have not put on a lot of weight since being pregnant, My bump is a good size but other than that I don't feel that my body has got much bigger and changed at all. He then said perhaps it is fluid retention......

Tell me I'm not fat.....!!

I was sensible exercised too, and I put on 4 stone (sorry about 2.5 at 34 weeks!) and I'm 5'9. I lost a stone giving birth and 2 stone over the next month. I've got just under a stone left to lose and he's 3 months old next weel so don't panic it'll all stay! I've lost without effort, but will need to work on the last stone I think. I was 9st to start and went up to just over 13.

Dreemagurl · 31/08/2010 15:37

Hi No Tea - really wouldn't worry about it. Can't believe your doctor said that - you'd think he'd know better to be a bit more sensitive around us hormonal pregnant ladies! I don't think you've put on too much at all. I put on 2 stone by 30 weeks and it's tailed off now - I think it really depends. I've been trying to eat healthily (carrot cake counts as part of your five a day, right??) but definitely been indulging in the "wrong" foods as well - baby loves chocolate! And I haven't put on much more weight (now 34 weeks), so you might find that you've put on all the weight you're going to from nowon. Having said that, they do say that the last few weeks is when you tend to balloon - but a lot of that is fluid retention and gas. Just remember it's all a natural part of life, and the more fat reserves we have, the better it is for baby and breastfeeding (if you are planning to bf). My friend put on 4 stone throughout her pregnancy and now with her bubba at 8 weeks, she's already lost over a stone.
If you're feeling really bad about it, I recommend swimming - it's a great exercise which doesn't feel like much, and I find it so relaxing. Also it feels like you're weightless in the water which is fab!
Please don't worry yourself about it, you've got enough to think about just with the pregnancy without thinking about things we have little control over. Good luck and chin up! :)

saoirse86 · 31/08/2010 19:22

I'm 5'2" and was 8stone 5lb pre-pregnancy. I'm now 36+4 and have put on 3 and a half stone. I know that sounds a lot but I don't look big (unless you knew what I looked like before). If you weren't worried before you certainly shouldn't be worried now. Ignore him. If your MW hasn't mentioned anything (even mine hasn't) then it's fine.

Muggle1978

I would hardly call 11 stone 4.as having a nice figure.

WentOnABearHunt · 31/05/2013 12:51

harsh!

Teaandflapjacks · 31/05/2013 14:28

EmpressofGirton - eh? Shock !!

OP - I live in germany, we get weighed every 4 weeks as standard. I actually found this helpful when I had really awful MS so we could see what was really going on with that. I am now 31 weeks and have put back on the stone I lost, plus another 10lbs. My doctor has said some of this is water. I worried about my weight (no clue why, since I was a healthy BMI before anyway) and she told me I am def at the lower end of weight gain, please stop worrying about it, and worry instead about growing baby! I think the obesity epidemic is much less where I live (at least from my own 'straw poll' of seeing people out and about) and here they think it is quite normal to gain up to 15kilos (which is 3 stone). In any case, all these charts are based on a guideline and averages. You also have to remember you could have up to 6lbs of water being stored like a sponge, and when you get weighed makes a HUGE diff. I.e. in the morning, first thing, after wee etc.... - or later in day, with heavy clothes on. This can add easily 4-6lbs on your weight. The only way to properly know is to weigh self at same time, after doing the same things. Or your boobs could be much bigger than before - some peoples just grow and grow. If you look at the weight gain breakdown, you can see the average of what it is all made up of - here:-

By the time you come to give birth, you'll be carrying quite a cargo! Just over a third of your extra weight will come from your baby, the placenta and the amniotic fluid. Here are some averages to give you an idea of how much they weigh:
At birth, a baby weighs about 3.3kg (7.3lb).
The placenta, which keeps your baby nourished, weighs 0.7kg (1.5lb).
The amniotic fluid, which supports and cushions your baby, weighs 0.8kg (1.8lb).
But what about the other two thirds of extra weight? These can be accounted for by the changes that happen to your body while you're pregnant. Again, the figures are averages:
The muscle layer of your uterus (womb) grows dramatically and weighs an extra 0.9kg (2lb).
Your blood volume increases and weighs an extra 1.2kg (2.6lb).
You have extra fluid in your body weighing about 1.2kg (2.6lb).
Your breasts weigh an extra 0.4kg (0.9lb).
You'll store fat, about 4kg (8.8lb), to give you energy for breastfeeding.

Your doctor sounds like the proverbial bellend. Hmm

froubylou · 31/05/2013 15:03

Empressofgirton.

That is a bloody cruel and unnecessary comment to make.

I weigh more than that usually and am not as tall. I have a lovely figure. Boobs,a bum and a real waist and everything. I swim 3 times a week, walk about 5 miles a day and have 2 ponies. I am a size 12 usually.

What would you call a lovely figure? I hope you are a man because I do hope that another woman wouldnt leave a remark like that on a thread re weight gain in pregnancy.

beckie90 · 31/05/2013 15:16

empress why drag an old thread up to make such s cruel remark? doesn't matter what you weigh thats just a number, people can look much more than they weigh or much less. how can you possibly say shes not got a nice figure because of a number when you have never even met the lady. Very rude.

EmpressofGirton · 31/05/2013 16:05

Just my opinion. 11 stone 4 and size twelve is a little on the heavier side. As a nation we are unhealthy and need to stop justifying an unhealthy lifestyle. I was merely suggesting that Muggle1978 would benefit from losing some weight. :) For herself and for the sake of her child. If Muggle1978 is reading, I know some wonderful books that give advice regarding losing weight and dropping a dress size (or two :)).

StuckOnARollercoaster · 31/05/2013 16:20

Zombie thread revival and nasty to boot - will report

EmpressofGirton · 31/05/2013 16:21

Froubylou
and Muggle1978

Haha. Size 12 is a bit on the heavier side...

beckie90 · 31/05/2013 16:25

Awww you must really have a figure like a supermodel. Good on you, thats fab that your so wonderful you need to put others down. I wish I was as amazing as you :)

HazleNutt · 31/05/2013 16:26

you dug up a 2 year old thread just to tell someone that they are fat??

froubylou · 31/05/2013 16:56

Fat and happy darling, if a size 12 is indeed fat. Which it is not.

How much time must you have on your hands to go trawling through to find threads almost 3 years old to be 'controversal' on?

Maybe if you ate more (am assuming you are indeed supermodel thin) and had a life you wouldn't feel the need to do this?

My sympathies sweetie. It must be so lonely to have to do things like this for entertainment on a lovely summers day.

Jog on now darling, I have children to feed and may even indulge in an ice cream (or 7!) myself. Being 10 weeks pregnant (someone loves my fat body enough to want to impregnate it) I think a little over indulgence is allowed.

Omg what an arsehole. I'm a size 6/8 eat too much rubbish. Yet my mum who eats an healthy diet is a size 12 as is mi nan. I prob eat 3x as much as they do it has nothing to do with stuffing your face for a lot of ppl. Size 12 isn't obese. Stop criticising those who are slightly larger then yourself. If you have a fast metablonism thats great but its no reason to think your above people because your a size 8 and bring threads up from almost 3yr ago just to cause a debate and "try" insult someone.

alienbanana · 31/05/2013 17:53

Cock off, Empress

Teaandflapjacks · 31/05/2013 21:24

God this goes to show what a preggo brain I have - I had not clocked the start was two years old, and even did a search to see what people were going on about! Confused Still - my ten cents worth - what an unbelievably cruel and weird thing to do!

PurplePoppySeed · 01/06/2013 10:08

Hi NoTea I'm also 5ft10, so hopefully can give you a comparison that is aligned to your own situation...

I started a lot heavier that you - starting weight was 12st4 but at 5ft10 that was just under a BMI of 25 which is still in the healthy range & I was a size 12. I'm now 25 weeks and have just got to 13 stone but according to all the charts that's lower than expected for my starting weight/BMI, in fact I only got a bump this week and haven't put weight on anywhere except bump and boobs. If I make 34 weeks and weigh 13st10 I'll be very happy :)

To say 12 is on the heavier side is probably true for someone who is 5ft but at 5ft10 my hip bones will never physically fit into anything smaller - at this height the lightest I've ever been is 11st - I looked ridiculous, and was still a 12 anyway! It's all relative.

anyway - I'm digressing...

PurplePoppySeed · 01/06/2013 10:10

Teaandflapjacks I've just done the same! Doh!

ChubbyKitty · 01/06/2013 10:25

I'm 5'3 and a size 12.

Frankly I don't feel "heavy". I feel beautiful and much happier than when I had ribs sticking out here there and everywhere.

igirisu · 01/06/2013 21:38

I have gained 22kg, I'm 38 weeks. What can I do? I just had to push it to the back of my mind before I drive myself mad. When I feel down about it I find a twix helps. I will deal with the weight gain when he is here. I walked 3 miles a day until I was 34 weeks and I only snacked on ryvita and fruit, I did everything I could without being ridiculous to keep my weight down and it got me nowhere!

Longfufu · 02/06/2013 07:34

I got told off by my midwife as well Sad I've put on 6kg (so a stone a think) and I'm 30 weeks. My BMI was 33 so she said 6kg was the max I should have put on for my entire pregnancy.

joanna0211marie · 02/06/2013 12:21

Im 5ft 4 and was 8 st 10 lbs at booking and a size 8, im now just over 12st I think was last weighed 2 weeks ago, I've given up caring lol.
