Hello

Not to start something here
but i love mayonnaise.

My midwife said its okay to eat mayonnaise aslong as its made from pasteurised egg yolk.

but everybody else is saying mayonnaise is a no no and it doesnt matter what type or whatever you shouldnt eat it at all.

the place i work we get pre packaged food and one of these items has pasteruised egg yolk in the mayonnaise thats on it and I had one of those but you know when you just dont know?

I know many might say just dont eat it all but its not something i want to give up unless it i really should be avoiding it

p.s just past the 12 week mark! Im ecstatic!

As long as it's from pasturised eggs, and the mayonnaise is keep in hygienic conditions, then I don't see a problem.

And ignore other people, there is a lot of ignorance around but it won't stop people telling you, as a pregnant woman, what you can and cannot eat.

Congratulations!

Fresh mayonnaise is made with raw eggs beaten with oil, and therefore is not recommended.

Shop-bought mayo uses dried egg and is absolutely fine.

Have a wonderful pregnancy!

Yep - I was told that as long as its shop bought its ok. I've been eating it all through - am now 37 weeks.

Its when you make it yourself with the raw eggs yolks and stuff that you shouldn't have it.

I just stuck to hellmanns in my pregnancies, even when i had a mcchicken sandwich at md's, i asked for hellmanns and explained why. which they were fine with. Grin

Pretty much any "commercial" mayonnaise is going to be pasteurised including that sold in supermarkets and served in most fast food and other chain/ high street restaurants. You can always ask the waiter.

The most likely source of an unpasteurised mayonnaise would be a more upmarket restaurant where they make their own. However, those sorts of restaurants also tend to use better quality ingredients so risk is still v low.

Keep to supermarket jar stuff so long as it isn't the homemade fresh stuff. Same as icecream. I just found out that my canteen at work leaves the mayonaise out over night... They say its ok cause its the squeezy kind? I'm slightly horified and will stick to my refrigerated mayo at home. (I wouldn't leave eat mayo that had been out even if I wasn't pregnant)

Mahraih · 29/08/2010 13:55

Yep, I eat the supermarket stuff.

And in restaurnants i ask - they always seem to have a supermarket version of their home made sauces et al!

japhrimel · 30/08/2010 11:15

NHS advice is that if pasteurised, it's fine.

It's only home-made or possibly deli stuff that won't be.

Listen to your MW, not to everyone else! Grin

Hellmans is and always HAS been fine. It is pasturised. So is any other bottled mayo.

IMO, homemade mayo is theoretically fine if it's been made with lion-stamped eggs, which are vaccinated against salmonella. (Salmonella poisoning itself is no picnic, but won't cross to your baby. It would dehydrate you and make you throw up and feel like death, but it would be very unusual to harm your baby.) But as I've said, eggs that are Lion-stamped should be fine. That's the theory - I'm eating soft boiled eggs that are lion-stamped but not actually raw ones! Grin
