Any sleeping tablets I can take?

AM wretched with lack of sleep, have had sleep problems from various reasons (insomnia, discomfort, nausea) for most of my pregnancy) but am now regularly up between 3.30 and 6 with the baby kicking 7 bells out of me.

I had sleeping tablet in my second trimester (called Zopiclone or similar) but I'm not sure if they would allow me to take any this close to the and (am 36 weeks).

Just wondering if anyone else has taken anything in the third trimester, and if I call my dr on monday what the chances are of them proscribing me something?

hi, i'm quite surprised you were allowed to take zopiclone at all - i've always assumed no sleeping pills were okay in pregnancy. i'm an insomniac too but have never thought i'd be able to take anything for it. i have some good nights and some bad, and just kind of grit my teeth.

Well the doctor wasn't keen, but I was desperate and signed off from work.

Am still desperate now, am exhausted, I've been so long without a decent nights sleep.

Can I take anything herbal?

Please help someone, I am desperate! I can't get anything I want done, I don't have the energy for anything, and I have a 3 year old!

Poor you. I had this first time and it was hideous. I take Bach Rescue Remedy sleep stuff, Boots insomnia tablets (homeopathic) and a Neal's Yard Lavender roll on for my wrists this time. I've been loads better and although I'm less settled after four I do get quality sleep up until then.

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 15:12

Thanks, am off to Neal's Yard as soon as DH gets home from work. Going to get some Bach Flower stuff for exhaustion, and see what else they can give me (except for Chamomile - yuck!). I also have a roll on, I should try that too.

Then I am going to Boots and am going to by Nytol (herbal) or Boots own version. The Nytol website says not to take in early pregnancy so should be ok. Are yours just Valarian tablets?

Then I am going to Dunelm Mill to get a full body pillow if the have one in store. Am using a V pillow atm but it gets in DH's way and he is on the sofa most nights :(. I am so sick of the money I have spent on trying to sleep.

Fortunately my lovely neighbour and her 9 old have got my DD for a couple of hours bless them! So I've got a short break, I would go and try to sleep but it's a bit late and DH will be home in an hour and I need to nip off to NY before it closes, else I won't get to go till Tuesday.

Oh, just checked NY open till 6 so I potentially could go for a sleep, yay!

Bumperlicious - I saw your other threads and really feel for you. I was wondering - have you thought about accupunture? For all elements of pregnancy 'delights'. I have had really bad hip pain and it really helped ( and before pregnancy I had it for anxiety and insomnia etc)

japhrimel · 28/08/2010 16:30

This is what the BNF says on zopiclone:

Pregnancy: avoid regular use (risk of neonatal withdrawal symptoms); high doses during late pregnancy or labour may cause neonatal hypothermia, hypotonia, and respiratory depression

So possibly they might not be happy giving you anything as from next week you could go into labour at any point.

I hadn't realised any sleeping tablets were okay....might see the doctor if my insomnia gets bad again. At the moment I'm coping by doing a lot less and having naps.

Have you tried marie mongans hypnobirthing cd? Sends me to sleep every time, and I'm sure is far prefarable to taking medication.

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 19:37

Thanks for the tips. I guess the problem isn't that I can't get to sleep, it's that I can't stay asleep.

Today was not my finest hour. They were crap in Neal's Yard, all 'we can't tell you what is safe in pregnancy but you can pay £20 to see our medical herbalist and she can advise you', well if she can advise me what to take maybe she should advise the NY staff so that they know what to recommend. I stalked out muttering that I was going to go and drive my car off the nearest cliff (which to be fair is probably a bit of a drive away so I probably would come to my senses before I got that far Grin).

Then I went to Boots and asked if there was anything they can give me, to which of course they said no, so then I just sobbed in the middle of the shop and on the shoulder of the pharmacy assistant. She was very lovely bless her, I sobbed for about 10 minutes.

I then went to Sainsbo's and bought some Nytol herbal which I don't know whether to take.

The woman in Boots did recommend a surgery nearby that opens every day till 8pm so I have booked an appointment to see a doctor tomorrow and will wait till then and ask about the Nytol. It doesn't say that you can't take while pg, just that you should speak to your doctor.

Ask your doctor whether you could take sominex - promethazine hydrochloride - I know it's sometimes prescribed for hyperemesis and also knocks you out. But I do think that maybe it's not to be recommended near term as it can cause clotting problems for the neonate. Still, may be worth asking about....

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 20:19

If I could take something just once or twice a week that might be enough to help.

Failing that can I just sleep suspended from wires, or in a floatation tank or something? Maybe a cloud...
