HI this is very strange and hard to describe but i am 17 wks with baby no 5---arggh. I have got big quite quickly but it is obviously low down although my "bump"seems to be quite rounded under my boobs too.Ihave noticed for ages that if i twist my body it feels like my upper abs jerkily poop out in a spasm. It doesnt hurt and goes back in when i twist back. I havent had it before in pg and lately it is getting more frequent. What is going on? I am going to see Dr next week. Any similar stories? I doubt it. It seems weird.

Have you got an abdominal hernia?

This happens when your muscles separate and a bit of gut pops out into the gap.

Tbh that's what I imagined it would feel like if it was. no pain tho. will bother my gp next week.

OK. That might be it, esp with pregnancy no.5 (stomach muscles know what is coming and just relax IMHO)

Once the baby is born careful postnatal exercise will help get your rectus abdominus muscles back together. Don't head straight to the sit ups as they can kind of buckle outwards.

There are unlikely to be massive complications from this during the pregnancy, because the gap between the muscles will be quite large. Hernias are divided into reducible (bowel/intestine slips back when lying flat) and irreducible (stuck through gap).

From what you say and its position the smart money is on this being reducible.

If you do get bad pain then you need to get treatment asap, otherwise mention to your GP and don't worry.

look up rectus abdominal split/seperation.

Some non pg people have it anyway, muscles are designed to seperate if need to, it's how quickly they get back that is important.

You possibly had a split with earlier pg, variable how well this is checked post delivery.

I've got an upper abs split already, 21 weeks baby no 1.

Make sure you roll over onto side to get up, rather than doing like a kinda sit up to get up from lying.

No Ledkr, I am not a physio. I practised as a doctor for 5 years, but I left medicine about 15 years ago, so I am really just an interested amateur.

I had twins (both a good size). After they were born I could fit a fist and 2 fingers between my stomach muscles (that really is yuck).

You can train it back into place.
