I'm home alone with the worst headache ever. I'm so fed up with this - I've had headached on and off throughout pg, but have had bad one for a few days up and down. Have tried everything I can natural wise and previously have takn paracetamol when it got bad.

Problem is I've run out of paracetamol. DH is getting more but he'll be at least an hour and not sure I can take it that long. Sure I've read nurofen is OK occasionally in 2nd trimester in a few places. Anyone done it? Would I be terrible to take one now? They are in my hand and I'm so tempted to take them to get relief.

NHS advice is that occasional ibuprofen between weeks 14 and 28 is okay:

You may have already tried it. but have you tried:

Ice or a cold flannel on the top of your head or forehead?

A heat pad on your shoulders/neck?

Caffeine? It's an effective headache med, especially if you don't normally have a lot, so when pregnant (and/or not drinking much caffeinated drinks) a strong coffee can have a real effect. Or try a paracetamol plus tablet.

Codeine is also okay during pregnant if needed but should really be okayed by a doctor (mine did for me).

yup, tried the hot/cold things and not sure about caffine - in non pregnant times I avoid it as it makes me feel horrible and jittery, don't want that now! Have taken nurofen and it's worked a bit..hopefully it can kick in a bit more.

I think the reason they say don't take it in the first/third trimesters is that it thins your blood, which puts you at slightly higher risk of miscarriage in the first trimester and might put you at risk of severe bleeding in the third trimester if you went into labour. I don't think it's because it's bad for the baby.
