Something in urine sample but results came back clear?

Had my 16 week check with the doctor on Monday. Took my urine sample and as soon as she saw it she said it was very cloudy. She said there were high levels of something (bugger, can't remember but pretty sure it started with L) and traces of protein. She thought there was an infection so sent it off.

Results came back clear and no action to be taken. Now I am concerned that it didn't look right anyway and these levels were obviously not normal.

I have been very itchy down below for a while, before falling pregnant. Doc gave me thrush treatment. The cream didn't work and I didn't use the pessary as it said not to use the applicator in pregnancy and I didn't want to use my finger. Doc said it is ok to use the applicator, they put not to for pregnant woman as anyone with placenta previa (sp) is not to use it. I also told her that it does smell, which to me says that it isn't thrush but they are still treating it as such and aren't even looking for anything else.

Has anyone else had any experience of this?

Can you talk to your MW? It sounds like you need to have a swab checked for BV - the bacterial vaginal infection - as well as thrush.

Also, find out what was in the urine sample.

The dip test they use to check for indications of infection (which checks for the presence of nitrites) can't differentiate between bacterial and fungal infections, so bear that in mind too.

If there's definitely no infection - which doesn't seem clear atm - then the fact you have protein in your urine should be closely monitored in case it's PE or something else.

Leucocytes - white blood cells. Can be entirely normal or indicative of infection.

I had this for the first six months of my pregnancy and I think there may be leukocytes in your urine. Had samples sent off four times and nothing wrong. GP investigated further and believes it is simply the excess discharge which a letter from the testing lab also confirmed could be a cause. Anyway, they advised to increase my fluid uptake and keep flushing your kidneys out and the last few weeks my results have been normal. My GP thinks some women just produce more than others. Get it checked out anyway, but it may be similar to me.

Thats the ones WMMC. Thanks.

So even though there were a lot, doesn't necessarily mean there is an infection?

The doc wasn't concerned about the protein. She said it was a very small amount and it was probably because of the increased white blood cells.

No it tends to mean you've had an infection but your body has fought it off. :)

i had the exact same thing the other day, went to docs as not been feeling too well, and noticed my urine was very strange in colour, she tested it and said there was blood in it, she seemed bit concerned and sent it off, phoned for results yesterday and she said it came back normal. surely blood in urine is not normal

DetectivePotato · 27/08/2010 15:02

I hate this. They make you worry then results come back normal so they don't bother to explain anything to you.

I was anaemic last year, when DS was 20 months. Doc said it was probably from when I had him. Had iron and folic acid tabs and levels (eventually, took a while) went back up. Blood tests since have shown that my levels have continued to drop ever since and now I am 0.2 above being anaemic again, a year later.

Still not prescribed anything. It is inevitable that I am going to end up anaemic again. Doc did say before that my body doesn't appear to be storing iron and I will have to be referred if this is the case. Next blood test isn't until I am 28 weeks now.

So I am suppose to manage being pregnant, with a 2 year old and already having M.E. and IBS, and just wait for my iron levels to drop enough again.

I'm getting tired enough as it is!

Sorry, rant over now.

thats same as me 2 lol. last pregnancy was anemic and before this one my iron level was still low so they told me to eat more iron rich foods, when i had my tests the other day i told the nurse id been so exhausted somedays i couldnt even wash my own hair and had been getting bad head aches i feel alot worse than last time, but when i phoned for results the receptionist didnt explian anything just said my white blood cells were fine and some other things, but didnt here her mention iron, hows it possible for it to be normal when it was low before and pregnancy makes it worse especially as i can barely eat. im just clueless.
rant 2 over now heeyyy dear

DetectivePotato · 27/08/2010 15:20

I hate it when receptionists give out results like that really. Mine do it and yes they do an important job, as all jobs are, but they are not trained health professionals and I would rather hear it from a doctor or nurse so I can ask questions if necessary.

I had protein in my urine at 32 weeks and had to provide another sample which was sent off, the second one was midstream one so shouldn't contain bacteria that are just hanging around in the urethra as the ones you take to the usual midwife appointments may.

Can't comment on your itching but if you're worried go and see a different GP. I had thrush at 16 weeks and used the pessary with no problems at all. For some people thrush also takes more than one treatment to clear up.

beckie90 · 27/08/2010 15:23

i know i phoned back and said well you didnt mention anything about my iron level and all she could say was i think its included im gonna mention it all to my MW as im convinced my iron is not right as im so pasty i look really ill, not to mention round my eyes look black lol

japhrimel · 27/08/2010 15:52

DetectivePotato - can't you supplement iron yourself whilst waiting for the referral?

DetectivePotato · 27/08/2010 19:05

I could but I want the blood tests to be acurate and show that I am not storing iron which there has to be a reason for. If I take supplements, it won't show my dropping levels and I won't get the referral.
