gestational diabetes confusion

Saw consultant today who advised me that before I have the proper test (at 28 weeks), I should follow GI diet, as that is basically what I they suggest unless I need insulin. I'm high risk as had it last time, but undiagnosed, I had a humungous baby boy with blood sugar problems when born, (it was so scary) so they are checking this time.
The problem is there is SO much conflicting advice out there, I just don't know who to trust. The gi 'traffic light' system says that it is ok to eat milk chocolate, snickers bars and nutella! But not bran flakes. Some sites say brown rice is ok, others that it is as bad as white rice. Been looking at old threads and got some ideas, just wondering if anyone else dealing with this now, and got any good advice that actually works. Any help would be really appreciated. I really want to avoid going through same experience with this baby.

I've been recommended a GI diet book by Rick Gallup? I was told it was the most straightforward and easy to follow, and actually explains why some foods are OK, and others less so.

Hope you can avoid the diabetes this time :)

OOh, thanks.

The rick Gallup one is the traffic light system, does look good, except the choc confusion!

What do you have on your toast?

Also, do have porridge? With honey? It must be vile without.
I was told today that baked potatoes aren't allowed (I LOVE them) but boiled new potatoes are!? Just don't get it. It's so frustrating that it is confusing.
I'm glad it's going well for you.
What kind of yoghurt do you have?

I'm also worried about this, I've been diagnosed with high blood sugar and my sister was diabetic through both her pregnancies.
I've been advised to try and cut out refined sugar which includes white pasta etc. If you can manage your diet it means less chance of injecting, baby problems etc. I think it's worth it!
Try baked sweet potatoes rather than 'white' potatoes, they're really nice!

I have got GD and following low carb portions/regular snacks diet (suppose in a way it's easier for me as I'm monitoring my blood sugars so able to see effect/moderate from that).

The top tip I was given was to use soya milk in porridge - I've been using Alpro which has 1/2 the sugar of reg skimmed milk but weirdly tastes sweeter (I would normally add sugar but don't need to with this).

Best of luck - know it's daunting initially, but 8wks in I've not looked back and am feeling really good on it xx

I would definitely prepare your diet for high fiber foods. I did a quick search and found some foods that you should be able to eat, although your doctor should recommend a bit of food for you to eat.
