another question on strep b - sorry

i know there have been a couple of these threads around recently, so i'm very sorry if i'm going over old ground. i'm due to see my mw next tuesday but am getting impatient and stressed which isnt good for me or the baby, so was hoping some people here might have answers.

2 weeks ago (ish) i had a phonecall from the hospital confirming i had strep b, the hospital mw said not to worry, i would just need an injection when i went in to labour, she briefly explained what strep b was, but in no great detail. i was in shock and didnt ask her the questions i should have done.

i put the phone down quite bewildered by this news and turned to google, i was quite happy and content with what i found out and was happy to wait untill my mw appointment to ask further questions, untill a 'friend' of mine told me strep b was very serious and could kill the baby (being a cautious googler i hadnt come across this).

so i went back to google to put my mind at ease, i've come across a couple of things that have got me quite worried. the main one of them was a site saying the first lot of anti-biotics needs to be given at least 7 hours before the baby is born or there could be serious consequences.

the problem is when my mum had her first baby she went from 0cm (ie going to bed, not feeling any twinges or waters breaking etc) to cuddling her new born in 4 hours all natural, not induced. my sister was very similar cuddling her baby in 5.5 hours, my maternal grandmother was 4.5 hours.

this has got me worried that i will be similar and wont have 7 hours between knowing that i'm in labour and giving birth.

i'm well aware that some websites are out to scare monger and arent 100% accurate, so does any one know if this is right? and if so what will the docs do about it? or is it one of thoes things that there is nothing that can be done?

Check out this site, it should be pretty reliable info :gbss.org.uk/

Using google to get medical info is a good way to get unreliable sites mixed up with decent ones. If you stick to reputable sites such as NHS.uk, Medicinenet.com, Patient.co.uk and the sites of registered national charities, it's a lot better.

Afaik, the antibiotics have to be in you 4 hours before birth to have full effect.

If you don't get the antibiotics or don't get the full effect, then either your LO could have antibiotics after birth just in case or they could be closely monitored (most babies of women with just a positive GBS test result and no other risk factors do not go on to develop GBS).
