i'm 5'4 & a size 12, ually 9.5 - 10 stone & thought i was pretty healthy.... but at my booking in appt yesterday they weighed me & said my BMI was 26 making me 'overweight' already... I porbably didnt eat enough before, and have eated LOTS or carbs so far.. but i dont even show yet, other than my newly acquired enormous boobs how can i be so heavy so quickley... point being is it normal, am i likely to be at risk from diabeties?
whilst the mw & trainee MW were very lovely they were slightly eyebrow raised bout it all... despite being presumably not preggers themselves and a good size 14-16...
anyone else seeming getting heavy early despute not showing?
rant over!! x

If you went in the afternoon, you could have weighed a bit more (retained water, food etc), so if you've already gained, say, 6lbs, the extra could make it up to 8lb, which gives a BMI of over 25.5., which could be rounded up to 26.

Depressing though, isn't it! I'm 8+3, not showing at all, but constipation (sorry, TMI) and ginormoboobs mean I've gained 7lbs already. And I really haven't got any fatter!

Have you checked the measurements they wrote down in your notes and your own BMI on a calculator. I wouldn't worry about it anyway bmi is not reliable measurement in pregnant ladies just a starting point.

I put on a fair amount of weight in first trimester (more than all the books say), very little in second (less then the books say) and then caught up in third with first pg and looks like it's going the same way with the second.

Don't worry about it. BMI is only a real risk factor for complications above 35. And that should be pre-pregnancy BMI - they use the booking in apt BMI but that's not accurate, especially as you could be anything from 6 to 11 weeks pregnant at that apt!

Your new big boobs will through the calculation off, so as long as you're not putting on weight apart from boobs & bump, just ignore it. The issue is if you're putting on much weight on your legs, arms, etc as this is unnecessary weight gain.

I put on quite a bit in the first trimester because my boobs just exploded (from 30/2a to 34d), they grew so much and I didn't really put weight on anywhere else (well tummy got a bit podgy! Blush). My BMI was underweight before my BFP though and I wasn't eating properly.
Now in second trimester and bump is big but boobs have stopped exploding and have lost some weight from arms and legs so not worried now.
It's common to need lots of carbs at first to stave off the nausea so don't worry about it, you'll be fine!

I was another first trimester blimp, put on 5 kg by week 14 due to eating carbs during morning sickness and not taking any exercise. Then when I felt better and was more active and able to eat better, I seem to have turned some fat into baby - have put on 1.5 kg since week 14 (now week 20.5), which is about normal. Don't worry too much but keep an eye on it.

My bum is definitely keeping hold of some of the weight and that will no doubt be difficult to shift post-birth. If you are used to being very slim then you are bound to find the extra weight more uncomfortable.
