Hi, I am new to this forum, basically my story is that my little boy who is 3 weeks old was born with structural talippes of his left foot. i missed his appointment with consultant today due to sheer stupidity on my account as i got the date wrong, he will be seen next week now instead and he will be 4 weeks old. does anyone know whether the week delay in his treatment will affect the progress of his treatment, i see alot of you with babies with talippes had treatment started within 1 week of birth, now i,m worried!!!

hello and congratulations on your baby. my friend's ds had talipes, am pretty sure he didn't get treated till around 3 or 4 weeks, and the treatment has been very successful. don't panic about the week's delay, the treatment is likely to be over the course of months so wouldn't have thought it would make a long term difference.

Hello Pippins, congratulations on the birth of your baby. Sorry you missed the appointment - easily done in the fug of newborn days!

Look at it this way: had your baby been born a week late, or a week later than he was, and had been given an appt 3 weeks from his birth, he would be being seen next week - and his bones would still be of the same number of weeks growth from conception. So I doubt very much that a week will make any difference!

Have you had time to research talipes and it's various treatments? Ponestti treatment is widely available these days, but do check that your hospital offers it. The STEPS website is very helpful and has a forum for parents with children born with Talipes - you could check out experiences at your hospital - and ask on here, too. Spend your extra week getting yourself familiar with all the possibilities and terminology.

Talipes treatment is very very successful and your baby will be walking happily at the same time as his friends, so have no worries on that score.

Good luck!

Was his talipes not picked up on the 20 week scan?

P.S my DS was born with talipes, but as part of a more complicated condition - the talipes was corrected by the time he was learning to walk Smile

I've had two kids with it. Its actually quite common and am very confident one week will not make a difference.

Good luck!

ps by a diary,....you may have not used one before but life is about to get hectic with young baby around! Smile

Indaba · 24/08/2010 15:06

oops I meant "buy"

pippins26 · 24/08/2010 15:10

Hi Blu, thankyou for your reassuring comment, i suppose 1 week won't make much of a difference i am just so mad at myself for being so stupid and getting his appointment wrong. Yeah his talippes was picked up at my 20 week scan however when i was referred to a specialist who also scanned me he said he thought it was more positional so i stopped researching then thinking he wouldnt need treatment. my other little boy who is 2 1/2 now had positional talippes and didnt need any treatment, i suppose i was hoping this one would be the same.!!

Hi Indaba did both your kids need treatment?

STEPS

Both had 4 monthly checks at Chelsea & Westminster by physio type person. She said its outrageously common, they diagnose and just like to keep an eye on things usually. She said they only bother treating a small %, but do like to monitor when picked up.

And its not genetic, twas a co-incidence I had two kids with it. Both fine now.

pippins26 · 29/08/2010 17:37

hi everyone just wondering does the plaster be applied on 1st appointment?

2boysandbean · 29/08/2010 18:21

Incuba I'm sorry too say it is,genetic in fixed tailpes both me and my eldest son have it both of us have been treated ds feet are fatastic he was plastered at one week old with treatment as long as its started in the first 12 months its normally extremely successful so a week will make no differnce try not too worry pippins they do normally plaster at first appointment Goodluck but you will be fine if you need a chat sometime let me know as I do know what your going through xx

pippins26 · 30/08/2010 16:37

Hi 2boysandbean thankyou for your reassurance, both me and my husband are finding this condition difficult and cant help but feel we are to blame, was it something either of us done to cause this problem with our baby's foot, as there is no history of fixed talipes in either of our families. can i ask how old your son is? and did his development milestones i.e crawling, walking etc become delayed as a result of treatment?

Northernlurker · 30/08/2010 16:42

pippins I know one little boy who had this and the treatment made very little difference to his development. Even with his feet in plaster he walked before many of his contemporaries because he obviously would always been an early walker iyswim. Afaik his treatment was very successful.

Northernlurker · 30/08/2010 16:43

Oh and neither of you did anything wrong! It just happens sometimes

pippins26 · 30/08/2010 17:00

Thanku Northernlurker x

My son is 7 it hasn't stopped him doing anything he was on time, with all his milestones nothing you or your husband has caused this I was the first person in my family with it and its not stopped me with anything either I'm now preggers with number 3 waiting too see if this little one has it , its not the worse thing in the world and you will love your baby crooked little feet and once the treatment is complete you won't believe how fast its went xx

stottiecake · 30/08/2010 22:51

My son is 21 mo and had talipes of his right foot. I think we had 3 or 4 appointments at the hospital. They gave us exercises to do and all is well - he was walking by 13 mo and you would never know.
The physiotherapist actually said it would sort itself out in time without the exercises which was reassuring.
I think there might be a picture on my profile that shows it (he's lying on a change mat)
All the best x
