Pregnant after Mirena Coil

Hi,
I've just found out I am pregnant after having the Mirena coil removed on 30th July. I had it fitted 5 yrs ago.

After I got over the initial surprise I visited the doctor and was brought down to earth with a bump. Apparently the chances of miscarriage are quite high???

I've done a bit of reading on the internet and this does seem to be born out by other peoples tales.

Can anyone comment on this?

I had mirena removed ttc. Was pregnant 6 weeks later. Never heard of increased risk of miscarriage before?? Had another fitted after birth of dd and wasn't told this then either (different GP's).

parkj83 · 24/08/2010 13:46

Nope, me neither. I had mirena coil removed, and was pg within about 4 weeks or something. I'm now 36+3 :)

Excellent news! Without being overly personal, did either of you have a period before conceiving?

Yes. Why?

NervousNo3 · 24/08/2010 14:08

I haven't had any bleeding since the coil was fitted 5 years ago and wondered if that made a difference.

I still had periods although they did become lighter and less frequent. But only had first coil in for around a year. After five I expect they would have stopped altogether. That's normal I think. Can't imagine it would make any difference to viability of pregnancy though - poss ttc but you've done that!!

Did doc say the chance of mc was related to the coil? My GP just emphasised that the chance of MC is high in the early days of any pregnancy.

I was surprised she mentioned it at all and a bit upset. How do you feel?

NervousNo3 · 24/08/2010 14:18

Thanks for the boost, I'm feeling better about it again. Serves me right for reading too much in the internet I guess!

Don't want to sound stupid but what's ttc? Im new to Mumsnet and will admit to getting a bit lost with acronyms!

ttc - Trying to conceive. Never, ever read up on anything medical related on t'internet!!

NervousNo3 · 24/08/2010 14:41

Thanks for your help. I'll go on enjoying the pregnancy and stop worrying. Smile

Molly - sound advice, which we will all ignore of course! GrinGrin

I suppose one justification for the Dr or Mw telling people there is a high chance of any preg ending in MC, is because it's true - around 75% of conceptions are lost, but most of these are lost before they even implant properly, or slightly later, at the time your period would have happened (at or before 4 weeks pregnant). After you have actually missed a period, MC rate goes down to about 15% (rising with age, to about 50% in the over 40's).

Dr know women TTC will often test DAYS before their period is missed (I would test daily with internet cheapy pee sticks, and know plenty of others do too!), and they will test positive for pregnancies that previous generations of women would have known nothing about, so they are maybe just trying to introduce a note of caution into your excitement. Not very nice to listen to though.

hello Nervousno3. I had my mirena removed on 15th June and found out I was pregnant on 7th July. The Dr removing my coil told me it would take a couple of months for my system to get back in order so I was extremely surprised to have been pregnant at all. Sadly I have just miscarried at 10 weeks. Never at any point did anyone tell me that my chances of miscarriage could be higher as a result of just having mirena removed- so I am not sure what the Dr who said that was basing his/her info on? Is there any actual proper research backing this up? If there is I would like to know it!

Before my mc I did think it was odd to have conceived so quickly, but we just put it down to having efficient systems! Never at any point did I worry myself about miscarriage until it actually started to happen. The Dr who did my ultrasound to confirm mc said that mirena can thin the lining of the womb making it harder for the foetus to cling onto but of course there is no way that she could conclusively state that that was the cause of my mc. And she only told me that because I asked whether it could have had something to do with it. My mc could be as much to do with my age (37), as to the risks increasing with each pregnancy (i have 2 dds) or the fact that I had fallen over the week before or any other reason that causes mc. I think what I am trying to say is that even if there were scientific research which did connect rapid conception after mirena with early mc it would still only be a risk just as there are other risk factors (such as age, health, previous pregnancies etc)- but it doesn't make mc inevitable. Your pregnancy is completely unique to you as mine was to me and I sincerely hope it continues well. You are not going to find anything on the internet which will reassure you because everyone and every pregnancy is different and so many other factors come in to play. Having just miscarried I only really want to move forward rather than make myself feel worse worrying about whether it was because I conceived too quickly after having the coil removed. Sometimes there just isn't an answer.

parkj83 · 25/08/2010 15:32

Yes, I did have one period, then conceived :)

Hi Guys I am a newbe to this site...I came across mumsnet after doing some research online about getting pregnant after having the Mirena coil. I am a 35yr old Mum of 9 year old twin girls. I am about 2 years into my second m coil and my partner and I have had discussions about trying for a baby next year. When first having the coil fitted about 6years ago I wasn't told of any problems conceiving in the future, but as i am reading more and more on the web it seems there are problems with some women having trouble getting pregnant or miscarrying. I am very worried now, I was going to get my coil taken out half way through next year in the hope I get pregnant quickly, but now I think i may go to my GP and ask for it to be taken out sooner just incase it takes us a while to get pregnant. Does anybody have any advice????

whomovedmychocolate · 05/09/2010 19:33

I was told when my Mirena was put in a few weeks ago, that the risk of miscarriage with the Mirena in is high as is the risk of ectopic pregnancy, but once it's removed, within three days the hormones are excreted from your system and so you are at no higher risk than normal.

I'm glad you are happy OP and wish you luck :)

louise24x · 03/12/2010 13:46

Hi All :)
It's just all so confusing!
I had my coil fitted back in march 2006 after having my little boy thinking id never want any more! Which has now changed, iv just had the mirena removed today, I was so scared but didnt hurt one bit!
Its been in nearly 5 years and iv stil had a period every month which is light, and had the cramps and moody? everyone seems to not have periods?
the nurse said today that it is ment to stop the lining of the womb! thats why can take longer she said could take upto 6-12 months, but to start trying straight away! so im kind of confused on what to do??? there should be an actual site to give us broody girls some proper info!! :)

MedicalEd · 03/12/2010 14:22

I have never heard of any robust research suggesting there is an increased risk of miscarriage following a coil being removed.
If you conceive while it is still in place there is a higher risk.
One in four of all pregnancies are lost in the first 12 weeks, most before anyone knows they are pregnant.
Be very careful researching 'on the web', anyone can post anything.

passion3flower · 08/08/2014 10:26

The mirena causes serious damage to the female body, and the only way to get rid of these side effects for good is to remove the mirena and take natural supplements, herbs and foods and consider natural therapies that will eliminate estrogen dominance, help restore the balance of progesterone and estrogen hormones, and detoxify the body from all the toxins present in mirena such as silicone and copper.
