Water retention in face??

Has anyone else experience this? Seems to have come on over night and looks like an allergic reaction except feels like water retention. Eyes almost swollen shut when I got up and 3 big sack like bags of water under my eyes, big swollen double chin and cheeks, all in all not my best look!! Have had it really bad over the weekend in my feet but never like this in my face. Am using an icepack and drinking lots of water to try and clear but would love to hear of any others who've experience similar.

How far along are you? When did you last have your BP checked?

Don't want to worry you but it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, so if you haven't had your urine and BP checked recently, it's worth having it checked.

Flighttattendant · 23/08/2010 11:13

How many weeks are you? Swelling in the face can be a sign of pre eclampsia - please ring your midwife and ask to be seen urgently, especially if you are past halfway.

Any other symptoms - pain under ribs, funny vision, headaches?

Flighttattendant · 23/08/2010 11:14

Sorry I had it open in a new tab and I didn't refresh before posting! Blush

Flighttattendant · 23/08/2010 11:16

Ah I see from other posts you're about 6 months. Hope you don't mind me checking! Definitely worth being seen x

Flight When you say pain under the ribs, funny headaches what do you mean?

I've had pain in my ribs on and off and had a weird headache this morning (I don't normally get headaches IYSWIM).

Sorry for thread hijack, but just wondered if you could expand on what you mean.

happygilmore · 23/08/2010 12:03

It's like a pain in the centre of your chest I believe. If you have this and headaches you must call your midwife today, or go to your GP. It's one of the signs of PE and can move quite quickly so you must get it checked (but more than likely it'll just be the baby pushing on your ribs and nothing to worry about!)

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 12:07

My only sign of PE was water retention in my face.

Hermya321 · 23/08/2010 12:08

Ok so if you've had the pain in the centre of your chest twice in the past week but it's not been accompanied by headaches and BP was normal about two days ago, should I be worried?

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 12:09

My BP went from 110/60 to 185/125 literally overnight! :(

Hermya321 · 23/08/2010 12:11

Headache has gone now, but still may give the midwife a call just to check in.

happygilmore · 23/08/2010 12:18

Yes I would always get a pain in the chest checked out, sure it's fine but better safe than sorry. PE can come on very suddenly.

Valbonne09 · 23/08/2010 14:38

Thanks for the advice. OB asked me to come right in and my BP was elevated although not to a point where she was panicked. Just been told to head home to rest and hopefully swelling will subside. So off to do just that and hopefully tomorrow will look less like a Shar Pei!!!

Get your bag packed just in case. My mw told me to "go to hospital right away" - I was a bit Hmm at this so went home and packed a bag on my way to the hospital. Wink My suspicions were correct and a few hours later I was told I was not leaving hospital without a baby! I was very glad to have my bag with me!

addie81 · 23/08/2010 14:43

I have horrific oedema including pitting oedema in my legs and feet and hands, and a very swollen face, but no pre-eclampsia, so hopefully yours won't turn into anything serious either. You OB should have checked for protein in your urine? Providing there is none then the slightly elevated BP could be normal - its normal for your BP to climb slightly towards the end of your pregnancy.

Valbonne09 · 26/08/2010 12:53

All seems to have settled now which is good but been told to keep a watch for any over the top swelling. In for next appointment next week so they'll check me again. Had proteins in my urine before but luckily not this time so all I was told to do was rest. My kind of prescription :)

SkiHorseWonAWean how far along were you when they delivered you? I am only 26+4

I am sure you'll be fine but dont risk your health and ignore warning signs like I did...make sure you are checked every few days, i went from all clear full check up to two weeks later full pre eclampsia that went bad (onset of organ failure) so wee fella 10 weeks early and me in hospital a month...i was climbing sand dunes day before admission but had a headache and a only slightly swollen face...take care missus!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 29/08/2010 09:40

Valbonne09 - I was 36+3 when they diagnosed it and was induced at 36+5.

Valbonne09 · 01/09/2010 11:51

Thanks all. No proteins, bp has stabilised and water gone down so all good. However, babys head engaged for the first time on Monday evening which was excruciating!! Was seriously concerned something was up but happened to have a check up with doctor the following morning booked anyway and they checked and the head was engaged and she said the baby could come at any time!! Freaked my out a whole lot and I frantically started purchasing cotbed mattress, pram and car seat with help of grandparents but thankfully the bub has reversed now which is much more comfortable. Hoping it was just having a practice and will stay up for a few weeks more as I'm only 27 weeks!
