Peeing in a pot?

Ok so I'm almost 38 weeks now and having midwife appts regularly so you would have thought that I'd got this peeing in a pot malarky down to a fine art.

Not so! What a palarva!

I cannot aim with precision at the best of times let alone now i can't see down there.

So i've resorted to pinching a kitchen jug (don't worry it won't be going back in the kitchen!) to give myself a bigger 'target' and then decant into the tiny sample pot.

How does everyone else manage?? Am i weird for having such trouble?

I don't get a pot either - there are certainly no concerns about sterility! I used a small jamjar (one of those ones you get in hotels with a couple of teaspoons of jam in!)

piprabbit · 20/08/2010 13:01

Liking pickles random aiming....

Just a note of warning, if you are using a container that has previously held any kind of food product (jam etc.) and it is not 110% clean (every crevice around the rim and so on, there may be traces of sugar/protien etc contaminating your wee sample.

I just wash it off afterwards. Our MW make us reuse them (and hand them back full as they aren't allowed to empty them). The GP thought this was Hmm when I mentioned it.

InTheZenGarden, my mother would be so proud! I've finally made a name for myself!!

Buzzybb · 20/08/2010 14:02

My sis [in Canads] was given one of these to help with the aim by her mid wife, I am not sure whether it is inspired or not but am betting it made things easierwww.freshette.com/

That's basically a SheWee.

ragdollismyname · 20/08/2010 15:06

I used a small tupperware container that i kept in the bathroom cupboard, my dp thought this was highly disgusting and was glad to see the back of it once dd was born!!
Our pots come with stickers on so even if you just try to aim surely the sticker will get all wet and crinkly??!!!
We were also asked to reuse pots, they are in short supply!! There can't be a problem with them being kept sterile because in the hospital they just ask you to pee in the brown cardboard things.
Gonna show this to my dp so he knows i'm not the only one who can't aim!!! (although i already know that from all the drips round the rim when he's been!!! ewww!!!)

So glad people are discussing this. I've tried the Pickle method, but the 'test tube' I've been given has a paper sticker on the outside and, well, you know what I'm trying to say... Blush

Have tried taking an empty Evian bottle, cutting the bottom off it and using that as my 'interim' pouring solution.

InTheZenGarden · 20/08/2010 15:19

Wow Swazzee, that's making an effort! Very Blue Peter Wink And so posh using Evian... Wink

Swazzee · 20/08/2010 16:03

Thanks Zen - I just couldn't find anything else and I was desperate for a bigger target to aim in!!

Although after what people have said about sterile pots etc, I'm worried what the midwife might discover - isn't Evian particularly mineral rich...?

Never seen this re-use thing. I always ask at the GP reception to take one away for my next visit, so I build up a bit of a collection. Problem is DH keeps throwing my stash away despite me telling him that they're not disgusting until someone's actually peed in them!!

NoTeaForMe · 20/08/2010 16:03

I use the pickle method too! My pot has a sticker on the outside too and I thought it might go a bit crinkly but it hasn't yet! The first time I couldn't see what I wA doing I tried lifting my bump up, hahaha!

Pickle I also get given me sample back to empty out myself.....all fine, but a couple of times I have left it in my bag for the rest of the day/2 days! Bleurgh! Blush

lurcherlover · 20/08/2010 16:16

I have been using the same pot for most of my appointments as part of the NHS efficiency drive! And I always get it given back to me with my wee still in it as apparently they're not allowed to chuck it down the sink in the surgery. So mine is definitely not sterile, hope it doesn't affect results (having said that, those cardboard kidney bowls they give you at the hosp to pee in just sit in a pile in the corner of a storeroom until needed, so they're hardly sterile either!)

DancingOnMyBladder · 20/08/2010 16:49

Oh i'm so glad i'm not alone!

Didn't realise there were so many different techniques to obtaining your sample!

For a long while i did the 'aim and clean up later' way but i was so sick of having wee covered hands and empty pot that i nabbed the jug and started that way.

This thread is so funny.

I was told the same as puddock 'oh we can't give you a pot, just bring it in any container you have home' - unbelievable - like what!? A bucket, saucepan!? Would make the aiming problem easier I suppose...

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 20/08/2010 22:22

I sort of cover mine in loo paper and then aim so it doesn't get the sticker wet! Ha!

When I last went to the hospital the nurses wouldn't even take the pot off me, they made me hold it, take the lid off and tilt it so they could dip the stick in. Never seen that before.

aswellasyou · 22/08/2010 11:05

The first pot I was given at my booking appt was a special one in a pack with a funnel type thing. It worked fantastically well with nothing on my hands, that is until you come to take the funnel out and put the lid on and realise there's more wee in the funnel than in the pot and it just went all over the pot anyway.
Now I'm 35+2 and haven't seen below my belly button in weeks so just aim where I think it might be, moving the pot until I can hear it going in, then stop weeing when my hand starts to get wet because it's overflowing.
Somehow my sister finds it no problem at all and she's 36+1 with more belly!
The pots get so wet that I stole lots of clean pots from the hospital so I don't have to reuse the ones I've weed all over, it can't be nice for your handbag to have so much old wee all over it.
