Iv suffered from a constant need to spit from week4 of my pregnancy. Was told by a male doctor that he thinks its pyhcological but i swear i cannot swollow my own saliva without feeling sick. Even my partner can taste it when he kisses me. Doe anyone else suffer from this or heard of it before or am i just the freak......

It's normal, don't worry. Try eating little and often to soak it up!

I had this in my first pregnancy- it's called ptyalism.

Basically I was like a rabid dog and had lots of excess saliva.

Mine stayed with me for weeks 12-22. Mine finally cleared up when I had a holiday in the sun- I don't know if the sun helped or whether it was on it's way out.

I hope yours goes soon.

I had this on and off throughout my second pregnancy - also had hyperemesis and when the sickness was particularly bad the ptyalism was bad too.

Sucking boiled sweets helped.

The doctor was talking bollocks, it's a recognised condition.

I've still got ptyalism at 14+1 weeks. I have to carry a beaker with me everywhere as my mouth fills with froth every 10-15 seconds (when the sickness is at its worst - so I'm like a rabid dog too) or, at its best, more fluid saliva every minute or so. I have to spit it out as swallowing it makes me retch. I would guess there is at least a litre of it every day. In some ways it is the most debilitating part of my morning sickness, even though that is really bad in my case, because it is impossible to hide from shop assistants, bus conductors, etc, and prevents me working (public speaking - what could be worse!).

As far as I know there is no cure but time (though ice lollies help), but I was greatly encouraged when I bumped into a colleague who'd had it too and said that one day I'd wake up and it would just disappear. It is just nice to know that there are other people out there who can understand what you're going through. Hope your partner can sympathise.

I didn't have HG but did have pretty bad nausea & sickness and the hypersalivation was a big part of it. Now - 23 weeks - I still feel that I'm hypersalivating to some extent but it no longer makes me sick.

GoodnightNobody · 18/08/2010 15:49

yes, I used to take a bottle with me everywhere and have a furtive spit into it.

I too had hyperemesis but this stayed with me slightly longer than the sickness.

tis orrible but does 'just go' and it's like the skies become clear again.

Im now 32 weeks and i feel like it will never end. Im just hoping as soon as the baby is born it will disapear straight away. I have read that it can continue for a few weeks after. Is this true? Constant HG and hypersalvation must go hand in hand then as you all have seemed to have both. Iv had Hg since week 4 also. My family think its hilarious....spit pots every where. and i am seeing kind of the funn side. My pregnancy couldnt have been much worse really. but the end is near....i do feel it has made me a bit of a recluse though as i do feel embaressed around people i dont know.

thanks everyone

I never thought pregnancy would make me spit as much as a professional footballer!! :)

I'm 6.5 months now and have had this on and off.

In the 1st and early part of 2nd trimester, I felt too sick to swallow it. I had a plastic bucket and a load of tissue by the bed and I always kept a pack of tissues in my handbag, but sometimes in desperation just spat on the pavement - really gross!

Now I've noticed I tend to get it if I'm feeling anxious, if I am thirsty, and also after I brush my teeth!

I try keeping a small bottle of water on me too, somehow that helps. That and the tissues...

Good luck ezmay - not long to go now!
