Measuring 4 weeks ahead

Just had my 34 week appointment and my measurements have shot up from on track to now being 4 weeks ahead. Midwife commented on how big the baby felt too!! I'm scheduled for an ultrasound on Monday to check everything out. Had a GTT about 4 weeks ago which didn't show anything abnormal so I'm not too worried about it being diabetes.

I was just wondering, what the likelihood would be of:

a) the dates being off and he's actually further along!

or

b) he's just a bruiser and I'll have to be induced!

or

c) because I'm a size 16 normally he's perfectly normal and that extra 4cm is my belly!

Would be grateful to hear from other women who've gone through the same thing and what was the outcome!

Thanks x

I wouldn't worry to much. At the end of the day none of them will really know until the little lovely arrives! I was told my first was huge i was told things like " this one will make you scream!" and "you will need help with this one" and although she was 8lb she was still tiny - and i did it on my own with no salad scoop or suction! so just relax a little.

Having said that you are in the last weeks anyway so you could be a little further gone or the baby may just be ready

just smile and nod, but enjoy it

xx

from my very recent (couple of weeks ago) experience, i would take it with a pinch if salt, .
On the Friday, MW measured me, quite loosely, as i have spd, about a cm bigger than date. Over the weekend I gained 4 cms according to the consultant- cue scans, gtt.Nothing out of the ordinary. i think the only real problem was the consultants ability to use a tape measure!Grin

I think that only dating scans are accurate because up til 12 weeks or so all embryos grow at the same rate- hence they can 'date ' you. After that, it is not an exact science.
Also, if baby decides to move and stick her bottom out (as mine does frequently) then this will affect the measurement too.

i am only 4ft 8, so an average baby is still large for me. Babies don't conform to charts- I've had a 6lb 1 ds, and an 8lb 2 dd- and this one is looking 8lb-ish- equally she might just come in the middle. Size 16 isn't big, woman!, so no, the mw is measuring (in theory) just your fundal height.

Enjoy your last few weeks- and whatever size, you baby will be perfect.

Good luck on Monday Mam2Be. I'm in the same boat as you, measuring 4 weeks ahead (35weeks at 31). I've got a hospital appointment on Monday too, I think they are gonna test me for diabetes and do a scan. Your responses have helped put me at ease as I've been starting to worry, thanks Raahh and fizzthecat. Smile x

Thanks so much Raahh, you've made me think about things alot more logically!! I think it'll just be a case of waiting on Monday and seeing what the outcome is, although I do completely agree with you about the measurements, all of the 3 MW's I've seen measure me differently!!

Good luck to you too Vikks, I'll let you know how I get on :)..maybe we should just feel lucky to be having an extra scan!!! :o x

I've measured big with all mine, usually by 5-6 weeks, and yes I have had big babies (currentlyl measuring 6 weeks bigger at 28wks with dc3!). I have always worked on the principle that providing you don't have gestational diabetes you make a baby that is the right size for you. My GTT was normal both times and the babies were 9lb15 and 10lb7, both normal deliveries, 2nd delivery only 2.5hours. Do take any scan results with a pinch of salt they can be 20% out when calculating the size of bigger babies which can be rather alarming.

Good luck with your appointment on monday.

Mam2be- you are welcome- it can be really worrying with your first to hear all sorts of stuff, and often things don't get explained very well.

Look at your scan as an extra chance to see your baby, i'm sre everything will be fine! x
