I'm due to give birth at WMUH in 10 weeks. I'm starting to feel anxious as I have only heard horror stories about giving birth at various hospitals and was wondering if any one could let me know what their experience has been like at WMUH. I met my midwife there and I found her to be completely useless.

Please HELP!

Hi congratulations

I gave birth there 5 yrs ago, I thought it was ok during labour, they were quite busy and it was a long labour and we were left alone a fair bit
after birth dd had to spend a night in the SCBU as precaution they were short staffed, the rest of the time we were there she was in my room, my request.
overall my impression was clean hospital, short staffed, otherwise they were helpful except for the appalling breastfeeding support
I don't think it was much different in this regard, from most hospitals

I hope you have an easy and safe labour and birthSmilebest wishes

Hi Mena - I gave birth there at the beginning of the year and they were fine so don't panic! I used the birth centre for the labour which was great but then due to complications ended up staying 2 nights in the wards which wasn't so great in that it was really busy so the nurses/mw were rushed off their feet. They were perfectly pleasant though - just too busy for any in depth care/tlc (think this is common in antenatal generally). I wouldn't worry too much about one useless mw either as it is very unlikely that you will actually have her at your birth and you/your birth partner can always request another one if you feel you need too. I think there are a lot of horror stories out there but just try and ignore them as people are always more likely to say how awful their labours etc were. The positive experiences tend to get lost in amongst the drama of the bad ones.

Good luck!!! Smile

Oh yeah - if you can - opt for a private room as the wards are very hot and noisy!

Thanks sfxmum, I'm hoping for a easy and smooth delivery as my pregnancy has been somewhat difficult.

Thanks Josie22, I will def look into the private room option. I think you are right you hardly hear the positive stories. I'm not expecting it to be a walk in the park but the thought of knowing support is there should you need it, does put my mind at ease.Smile

Fingers crossed!

agree both with room, think it cost £30per night, and good birth partner both make a huge difference to the experience

i'm 34 weeks and due to give birth at West Mid, all the mid wives i've met so far have been great. So far i'm happier with West Mid than i was when i had DD1 at Kingston Hospital I think the private rooms are now £60.
