Hello all,

Im in need of a little rant.

I have gestaional diabetes - again!! but it
really gets on my nurves.

1st time i had it in the last weeks,

2nd time it was discovered at the routeen GTT test but the diabetic midwife was impossible to get along with so i basically told her to put the BS machine up her bum!

3rd time - told i had it from 15weeks although no one has offered the GTT. controlling well (most of the time) with diet

But i want to know if anyone has refused insulin?

They have basically told me that if i go on insulin may never come off (strong family history) so i would like to avoid it at all cost.

They said they just want me to enjoy my pregnancy but i dont feel its my pregnancy anymore. Its the diabetic midwifes!!!!!

Is there anyone out there going through this?

No, but I do know what the diabetic nurses are like so I feel your pain. I had GD diagnosed at 38 weeks (fine at GTT). That nurse plagued me and turned up a couple of hours after DD was born (at 3am!) to ask if I'd been checking my BS that day. Luckily for her, I was too tired to tell her where to stick it.

Hopefully someone useful will be along in a minute but just wanted to sympathise.

hi i am 35wks, and diagnosed with gd at 28wks gtt, cos my age and fam history, they gave me metformin, really upset my system, so gave me it in a slow release form x because i refused insulin, but now im near the end, my sugars are up and had to admit defeat, they have given me eppi pens, and insulin, not took it, i only got 3 or 4 wks left and im sticking to the tablets, even they do give me shits, cramp, wind xx

I had it with previous baby but it went undiagnosed until I had a massive baby 10lb4, with blood sugar probs. Was in special care for a week. It was terrible. Now preg again and told I will be monitored, but don't know what is involved. MW said not to change diet or anything. So much conflicting advice on line. worried x

I think sometimes they just get my back up, they bark things at you. it takes a lot of adjustment to get it right and sometimes they don't give you a chance.

Some foods are delt with differently by different people, i have found that man made carbs are a no no. and milk sends my levels flying, but like i said to the midwife; you are either very brave or stupid to tell me i cant have a cuppa in the morning!!

Also i eat different things on different days, as one day i do my BS levels before meals and the next i do them 1hr after meals - is this the same for everyone? also are the 5.9 before meals and 7.8 after a guild line for everyone?

I have also lost like half a stone, I dont miss meals I just eat less sugar - on one hand this can only be a plus but from reading some other forums people have been "told off" for loosing weight. I just dont think anyone can win!!

for anyone who maybe borderline i think take a look at your diet and see what sugery things you can cut out!

Thanks for all your replys it does help when you know there are others in the same boat

Now this is where I got pissed off with it. Because I was told max of 7 after meals. I went to 7.8 once on ChristmasfuckingDay, 2 weeks before due date and that was it, diagnosed GD, induced at 40wks, DD practically forced fed formula and spent 2 nights in SCBU for no discernible reason. Up till then it was textbook. The last 2 weeks were the most miserable of my life. DD was 8Ib 10, so the upper end of normal but I completely lost the plot and I'm sure it all contributed to my PND. Everytime since I have seen people on here talk about GD, that 7.8 figure has been quoted. Except in my case Hmm

And that is why if there is a next time I will be watching my diet myself and they can get to soddery.

fizzthecat · 18/08/2010 16:54

see i wondered it they were randum figures... i think that most of them are general diabetic docs, and from the programme i watched the other day. Diabetics always seemed to have an excuse for not turning up for appointments or controlling their diabetes. so i think when we go in with GD we take the brunt of the doctors and nurses frustrations.

I have come to the conclusion that going .3 over the friggin target is no biggy and they can like it or lump it

sorry rubbish at spelling

Rockbird I am supposed to keep my figures below 7 (solidarity emoticon) so I know your pain.

Although when I do sometimes go above the endocrinologist never seems overly worried.

It has made my pregnancy much more medicalised which I am a bit sad about, and now at 39 weeks I have been booked in for an induction on my due date, with the assumption that I will have a c-section as on examination yesterday my cervix was closed and high, and the baby hasn't even engaged yet (first child).

But I am on a big dose of insulin 3x a day and couldn't control it through diet at all, despite being very strict. But I have hopefully stopped the baby getting too big - I'm still measuring normal for dates.

Anyway, just wanted to say you have my sympathy. It turned my incredibly straightforward easy pregnancy into something that needed monitoring, intervention and worry, when I actually feel totally find and normal.

Looking on the bright side, I haven't put on much weight and hopefully the baby has had a great start as I haven't touched refined sugar for 8 weeks!

Maclaren · 19/08/2010 08:19

i really do think it all depends which hospital your at to what treatment you get!

I have to keep my sugars below 5.6 fasting and 7.0 2 hours after a meal I am now on 3000mg of Metformin so 2 tablets 3 x a day. I was diagnosed at 27 weeks am now 30 weeks at the moment I have lost 8lbs so far which my docs dont seem bothered by but I am about 5 stone over weight anyway!

Its likely I will be induced at 39 weeks which I am ok with because I was induced with the last two and to be honest its all I know!

Rockbird · 19/08/2010 08:22

Maclaren, I'm guessing (might have the wrong person) but I think you're local to me as if I remember rightly, you picked a buggy up from me once! I wonder if it's the same hospital (my diabetic witch nurse was Hazel...)

Maclaren · 19/08/2010 08:52

Sounds like me if I picked up a buggy lol! I am at Epsom Hospital I am crap with their names but I think thats her name! She has been quite nice to me so far but dont like the sound of your after care :(

Its the dietitian I could slap! she told me last week that if I keep it up i will have lost loads by the time the baby is born and I will have a will look so much better and have a beautiful baby Hmm I told her my baby will be beautiful if I lost weight or not!

Rockbird · 19/08/2010 09:06

Yep, same hospital (green Luna btw!). Even DH remembers Hazel and her visit when DD barely out Hmm

No, after care was crap but didn't help that I was a first timer so knew nothing about anything and went along with it. Presumably if you have buggies you have other children (or were just getting in early! :o) so you have a bit more sense than I had. When they said DD had to be ff I said ok, when they told me I was crap at bf and to give it up I said ok... Not next time, no way.

Your dietician sounds a charmer, and a bit of a tit Hmm. I didn't realise that the weight of the mother affected the beauty of the baby. Must have been a mix up at the hospital then because DD is gorgeous :o

subu · 23/08/2010 21:50

Ugh, I don't know much about the insulin itself, but my friend also was instructed to go on insulin during her 2nd pregnancy because she couldn't keep her blood sugar low even with her diet changes.
