A couple of questions for packing hospital bag!

Hi,

I have been writing a lost of things to pack in my hospital bag, I've been reading a few threads on here so think I have things covered but ......

How many nappies do I need to take?

What size baby clothes do I take? Newborn or 0-3 months? I was thinking 2 vests and 2 sleepsuits of each size so whtever the size of the baby we'll be covered?!

What clothes do I need to take for me? I was thinking PJ's for after the birth (I will def be staying in 12-24hours), nightie/long t-shirt for labour and giving birth?

What do I wear to come home, are maternity jeans a big no no? If so what?

Hope they aren't really silly questions!

I just packed a packet of the size 1's which tend to be 24ish in a pack but didn't use all. Clothes sounds fine to me, did change DS overnight as he wee'd everywhere so an extra set might come in handy. I had a nightie for after birth you might not want to have pyjama bottoms to have to pull up and down. Maternity jeans will be fine to come home in, you won't shrink a lot straight after birth. We didn't get out until 8.30pm so the first place we took DS was the chip shop and the lady behind the counter said 'oh look, a little baby and another one in there!' to which I replied 'no, that one came out of there yesterday!!'

I would take more baby clothes. We took 3 vests and 3 baby grows and used them all in one change. I was laid up in the bed and DH was changing. The set DS was wearing was wet. He managed to wee over his head on to the clean set waiting to be put on him. Then was sick down the new set. Mum had to run out and get more for me.

I packed 3 dark towels aswell. One for after the water birth. One for shower in the morning and one for my hair.

Make sure you have lots of thick sanitary pads. You'll need them!

Last time i made the mistake of not taking anything to eat. I was starving after the birth and as it was night their was no chance of getting anything at the hospital.

Agree with ILLGBT re the dark towels and thick sanitary pads. I wore them in a stack of 2 for the 24 hours afterwards and was highly effective! I wore leggings and a long tunic/tshirt thing home and was v comfy - not sure if jeans would be a bit uncomfy. not sure re the rest as went straight home after the birth but would imagine lots of vests are a good idea as he/she will probably spill/spit a lot as you get started BFing or bottle feeding. Oh and our baby boy was a bit bigger than expected :-) so went straight into 0-3 clothes as we couldn't wedge the newborn stuff over his big head. Can also recommend arnica tablets if you have space - think they really helped postnatally. Good luck for the big day - hope it all goes really well for you!

I have maternity pads, a dark towel and other things like that on my list it was more the specific things I was wondering about. eg people just say nappies - but how many do I take? Clothes to come home in - what should I take?

Things like that!

Maternity jeans are a bad idea if they are under bump ones (in fact any under bump trousers are bad). If you end up having a CS they will dig right into the incision. I recommend very soft, over bump trousers like tracky bottoms. (Ditto for pants - you need big granny ones.)

NoTea come over to the Oct thread, we are having the hospital bag discussion there!

I just took a packet of the size 1s too. I wore a dress home as i thought maternity jeans might be uncomfortable after the birth but i would have been fine.

1 pack of nappied should be fine for 24 hrs. If you need more, the shops will still be open! At Barnsley hospital, they give you a couple to start with and they sell new born nappies in the hospital shop.

I agree with Jack underbump = on the scar! I came home in a black jersey maternity dress, white surgical stockings and pink Crocs. Glam! Then went on line an bought lots of tracky bottoms and yoga pants.

I'd pack more clothes - say 4 vests and sleepsuits, and a cardy too. Newborn size is porbably right. DS was 7lbs 10oz and was in new born until he was 5 weeks old.

More labour clothes. If it's your first baby your labour could well last for over a day, and in a hot, sweaty hospital room, especially if you plan to use a pool at any point, it's really nice to put on some fresh clothes every few hours.

It would also be useful to put extra clothes for yourself and baby, and extra nappies, pads etc., together somewhere obvious at home, so somebody can easily pick them up and bring them in to you if needed. I had to stay in for 6 days, so obviously one pair of pjs wouldn't have been enough!

Also you'll need lots of pairs of big knickers to hold the pads in place under your pjs - take more than you think you need, and only get one size larger than normal - I bought size 18 and was hoisting them up constantly!!
