sorry, another toxoplasmosis question

I am sure this has been covered by another thread but... just came back from staying with friends of friends a beautiful farm in Dorset. Just outside the kitchen door is a huge veg patch. We ate salad three of the four nights - the leaves were snipped off, not pulled from soil. Last night, after last mouthful, I found out the leaves hadn't been washed! I don't know if it was just last night (it had been heavily raining, so that was the excuse) as I didn't want to ask...

I'm now really edgy about toxoplasmosis. What's the odds? Should be worried enough to have a test? Or is it a too tiny chance? There was no grit or soil taste or feel on the leaves.

I would say the chances are very small. My understanding is that the soil risk is from cat faeces that might be present - but cats bury their poo, so it would be unlikely to be on the leaves.

It is very very unlikely that you would have it. You would usually have some symptoms (according to my GP): cold/flu-like (although some people are asymptomatic). You may well have already had it too. You can get your GP to do a blood test if you are really worried.

I had a sore throat the past couple of days but then so does everyone around me; trying not to look for symptoms. hard not to become anxious about all this stuff

Hi NYC40 - sorry to hear you worried about this. My honest opinion is that the risk is very tiny - I never used to wash bagged salad, ordered various salads systematically when out for dinner and had a cat for years and still discovered at the start of pregnancy that I am not immune to it and had never been exposed. So it really is not likely in my opinion.

The only way to know for sure is a blood test however, as others of said. I think this would set your mind at rest. It's easily done and you should get the results back fast.

Actually, I think it is rather bad of the friends not to have thought of this when preparing dinner. Though maybe there is greater awareness of it here than in the UK.
