Completely stupid question about clothes

Deliaskis · 13/08/2010 12:31

Apologies in advance, I think this is a stupid question but it's something I'm a little worried about so I'm going to ask anyway.

I'm 13 weeks so not really got a proper bump yet for maternity clothes, but really struggling in normal clothes. Yesterday and today, I have normal jeans on, undone, done up with a hair bobble, and a 'bump band' looking like the bottom of a white vest top under my shirt so nobody can tell my pants are undone.

The thing is, the bottom of the (undone) jeans zip is a little uncomfortable and digging in a bit, right at the bottom of my abdomen, about where the errmmm...hair starts (sorry if TMI). There's really no 'give' in the jeans there, and I'm a little uncomfortable but mainly concerned if this could hurt the baby? I'm sure it can't cos I'm sure it's well protected, but I was quite surprised when I had my scan, how much the scanner stick seemed to press into the bubble where baby was on the picture. So I know this sounds silly but I am a bit worried my tight jeans might be be felt by the baby.

So can someone either reassure me or give me a kick in the a$$ and tell me to get some proper mat clothes.

And sorry for being ridiculous.

The baby will be fine but if you are uncomfortable then go shopping!! A friend of mine was wearing maternity clothes from 11 weeks, I didn't start until 25 weeks. Everyone's different so just do what feel comfortable, try a few different styles and see what feels most like it will stay up!!

EndangeredSpecies · 13/08/2010 12:38

I wore jeans for 1st two pregs (first normal jeans then mat. ones) and tbh wonder why I bothered: maternity leggings with tunics over the top are so much more comfortable

I don't think you can hurt the baby by wearing them though.

Deliaskis · 13/08/2010 12:42

OK so that's two votes for shopping I think! I like mn!

Shop shop shop!

I'm 15 weeks and have given up on trousers completely and living in a selection of maxi dresses. All at size 18 (which look a bit weird right now as am a size 10!), so that as the bump grows, it will simply fill them.

Might go for maternity leggings though re cinammongreygound

EMS23 · 13/08/2010 13:44

I had to buy maternity jeans at 11 weeks but it's only more recently (am 25 weeks now) that I've needed other maternity stuff, like tops etc...
Maternity jeans are gods own work. Normal jeans are the devils invention!!

YellowCecil · 13/08/2010 13:45

Know exactly what you mean about the jeans digging in and had to ditch mine for exactly that reason around 14 weeks. DP's have some really comfy maternity jeans for £25.

Still wearing my work trousers + elastic band but that is mostly because I can't find any nice plain black maternity trousers anywhere. Any suggestions?

EMS23 · 13/08/2010 13:45

argh, sorry - posted before I meant to!
My point being, go shopping and enjoy! I have Mama's and Papa's mat jeans and more recently got some Jojo Maman ones too which I'd recommend as not too expensive.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/08/2010 13:48

It won't hurt the baby, but if you're uncomfortable with trousers pressing in there (I am when I'm pregnant) then you might want to look for over-the-bump trousers when you do get started on maternity clothes. I couldn't stand anything - even pants - pressing in along the hairline! Leggings are good too.

Oh, for the days when a pregnant woman draped herself in a kaftan or similar, rather than being 'told' by the high st shops that she should be squeezing her bump into skin-fit tops and low-rise, under-bump jeans. Hmm And I am not a fatty, not particularly, but I have real difficulty finding jeans that accommodate the more generous proportions of pregnant bum and thighs! Grin

Deliaskis · 13/08/2010 14:08

Thanks for lovely replies ladies, I think I'm going shopping!

And EMS23 is Jojo Maman really not too expensive? I haven't dared go in as I thought it would be astroprices. Might have a browse tomorrow.

On earlier advice, I went to M&S at lunchtime and have a pair of black trousers which are v comfy and look nice (might be worth a look YellowCecil) and am feeling much better.

Hiya, am now 27 weeks (due early Nov) and living in a selection of leggings, maternity jeans (good idea but do fall down if you don't adjust the buttons inside the waistband!), old trousers that still have some give/can use a hairband with, and a couple of maxi dresses. My difficulty will be when the weather starts getting colder- I normally live in tights in winter so if anyone has any ideas about good maternity ones then I would appreciate it.
My advice would be to buy stuff as you go along, rather than doing a big splurge now. You won't know how big you will end up and what kind of shape you will be. My bump is quite low and any fixed waistbands drive me mad, especially when I am sat down, so when at home in maternity jeans I wear them undone Blush.

EMS23 · 13/08/2010 14:34

My Jojo jeans both cost £29 a pair and that was full price, not even sale! I was also surprised at that as had assumed it would be really expensive.

nunnie · 13/08/2010 14:36

I am currently 29 weeks and wearing as I type a pair of old style next maternity jeans, with the side elastic but no waiste adjuster, these are the worst buy I bought when pregnant with DD they are constantly showing off my not so sexy underwear even with a belt on and they drop down and cause saggy crotch look.
Anyway the newer style ones which I own but at in the wash, have a djustable waiste and are much much better.

I don't wear leggings as don't have the legs for them, but I have heard off a few people they are a must for pregnancy and whilst in hospital so I have purchased a couple of pairs but not worn them yet Blush.

I had a similar question, and there were lots of helpful replies here (maternity clothes thread in Style & beauty):

nunnie · 13/08/2010 14:39

Should have said with DD I was in maternity bottoms from 27 weeks, but this time round I have gone into them at 18 weeks, but still wear normal smock tops and baggy t-shirts.

UserNameAngst · 13/08/2010 14:39

Redbird, my DS was born in Dec and liked you I lived in tights. The best mat tights I found were m&s, they were really comfy and just like normal tights, plus came in funky colours. hth.

Caz10 · 13/08/2010 14:41

Ebay is your friend!! I got loads of lovely JoJo, Blooming Marvellous stuff etc from there, great bargains.

Fluteyboots · 13/08/2010 14:41

Linen blend drawstring trousers, next £20. Can be worn throughout pg and after, as the will sit under bump. Very forgiving if your bottom is expanding too, available in a variety of colours and no pointy bits! I had 3 pairs!

Deliaskis · 13/08/2010 14:44

Thanks for link geekygiraffe and for more replies everyone else.

Am Shock that jeans in Jojo are only £30!

I have 1 pair of (borrowed) overbump H&M Mama jeans which have a tendency to slip down so only worn on colder days.

1 pair of H&M Mama 3/4 length trews - dead comfy.

58 million skirts - a-line, wafty, smart, knee length, ankle length etc all borrowed or bought through ebay. I love them all and would always choose them over either pair of trousers I have.

Agree with Caz10 re ebay - have got a load of bargains without breaking the bank. Most I paid was £9 for a Jojomaman smart white skirt fit to wear to a wedding.

Never found a pair of black maternity trousers that stayed up or looked good. I ended up using my normal ones with a black bump band until i finished work at 34 weeks.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/08/2010 18:17

Ethelina - are your skirts maternity, or normal and worn under the bump? I'm worried about stretching normal skirts like this (mind you, I couldn't fit into any of my normal skirts worn under the bump if I tried, now!) and I can't find any nice maternity skirts that aren't all 'work wear'. Any tips?

ethelina · 14/08/2010 08:48

Bit of both really. Elasticated waist ones are just a size larger and mostly sit under the bump.

I've been turning my non-maternity floaty ones zip undone to the front so it cradles the bump, and use a bump band to cover the gap - Amazing what a bump band and a cheap wrap/scarf thingy round my waist/bump area will hide achieve. Thought I would have to give this up by now but still able to do it at 37 weeks!

I got This off ebay a few weeks ago. Dead comfy overbump and goes with absolutely everything.

How far are you? What do you do mostly?

Applemuncher · 14/08/2010 11:53

Seriously - comfort has to be THE thing!!! I'm only 9 weeks pregnant but it was like someone pulled the rip-cord on my body as soon as I saw the 'positive' line on the test! I have no waist at all (hormonal changes etc) and it's not like I've got any trace of a bump yet. Weight gain is half hormonal, half due to me troughing away at junkfood (whatever my constant state of queasiness allows).

In short - you're only going to get bigger, go out and shop!!!! Be comfy and relax.

Mothercare have a sale on at the moment, they also have a 'buy one get one half-price' offer on all the sale items.

Happy shopping!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 14/08/2010 15:35

Ethelina, I like that skirt! Wish it weren't black, though. I would far rather have over-bump skirts. I did buy a size 20 (! am normally 14/16) cord skirt on ebay last time and wore it under the bump, but it was a rigid waistband and still rather uncomfy.

I'm 21 wks tomorrow (blimey, where did all that time go??) and I sit on my ample arse at home, Mumsnetting and looking after DS, who is 2. Grin

Meglet · 14/08/2010 15:40

Go shopping. I was in mat trousers at 9 weeks both time. I like to be comfy.

I had loads of maternity wear in the end. Stuff for work, stuff for daytime, stuff for the gym. Although I never bought dungarees as my sister and my P said they would refuse to have anything to do with me if I did Grin.

It all got e-bayed so I made some money back.

H&M were good for basics, and Dotty P's and New Look had some funky t-shirts / tops.
