Hi,

Well did the test this morning and got 2 little lines so it's looks like I'm pregnant - yikes!! What do I do now - do I need to tell my GP?

Background on me - I turned 32 this week, have been married nearly a year and this will be our first. V excited but v scared.

OMG I am the same!! just a year older and wondering what to do next.. am excited but at the same time cant quite believe it

emptyshell · 13/08/2010 12:12

Go to the doctors - some confirm it with their own test, some trust the home tests and don't bother. Make sure you know the dates of your last period.

Then they pretty much leave you to cook for a couple of months till the midwife at 8-10ish weeks. So you spend a couple of months frantically on pant paranoia patrol and prodding yer boobs.

Jenko77 · 13/08/2010 12:16

First thing to do is go and see the GP. Mine took my blood pressure and gave me a letter referring me to the midwife - that was it! I didn't even get a congratulations!

You're pretty much left to your own devices at first, which is really frustrating and slightly daunting, but then you have the scan and midwife appointment around 10-12 weeks - that's when it all becomes real. If you have any worries before this time then go back to the GP, or contact the midwife. I ended up doing an extra 2 tests between seeing the GP and having the scan, just to remind myself that it was all real!

Congraluations to you both by the way! I'm 33 and expecting my first in October, and I'm so happy and excited about the whole thing!! Grin

pussycatmomma · 13/08/2010 12:16

I just wanted to say congrats. I remember mumsnet was the first port of call for me when i did tests for both my little boys. They are 2 and 9 months now. omg....i remember the excitement well!!! makes me happy just to think of it though. I hope everything goes well for you .....enjoy the time ahead Smile

LibertyGibbet · 13/08/2010 12:18

You don't see a GP here. Mainly because the hpts are the same as, if not better than their tests. And tbh, there's nothing to see them for unless you have specific medical questions or concerns. A friend went recently and the convo went a bit like this...

Hello. I'm pregnant.
Congratulations. Have you any questions?
No not really.
Okay, see the midwife in a few weeks.
Oh. Bye.

Here you just book in with the midwife some time after 8 weeks.

LibertyGibbet · 13/08/2010 12:21

pussycatmomma . Wotcha. Tis ShowOfHands.

Haven't seen you posting since chatting about names while you were pg with what I now know to be ds2.

How the devil are you? Does ds1 adore him? What did you name him?

Congratulations mum of two. Clever girl.

spilttheteaagain · 13/08/2010 13:30

Congratulations hellie.

I didn't bother with the GP (only seen her once and I didn't like her), so I just rung reception at the GP surgery and asked for a midwife appointment which they were happy to give me at 4-5 weeks. She gave me the big pack of leaflets etc and my maternity notes and took my blood pressure and arranged a booking in appointment for 10 weeks.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/08/2010 14:12

Congratulations!

I went to GP with my first and was just asked if I was taking folic acid, told not to smoke and asked if I had any questions. With this one I just phoned reception and they asked me to fill in a form to refer me to midwife. Booking appointment with midwife is usually between 10 and 14 weeks (although they contacted me before had to give me their number) and you will get a letter from the hospital about your 12 week scan once you are registered with the midwife.

It is very exciting but I found it a tense few weeks! Try to relax and not worry about everything, before you know it you'll be watching your little one wriggling about on a screen!

bellalu · 13/08/2010 14:34

Thankyou so much for all the info.. its a weird sensation as you think.. do I tell anyone.. like my mum etc.. or just keep it under wraps until you feel pregnant and are more than just 2 red lines pregnant.. its a very strange feeling..

angels1 · 13/08/2010 14:46

when I first went to my GP I was clueless and knew nothing about what to expect. She suggested buying a pregnancy book to give me some info on what to expect, which was very good advice as I'm the sort of person to want to EVERYTHING with what's going on. I know different people recommend different books but my GP said 'what to expect when you're expecting' was good, and it's pretty thorough and answered most questions I had.

helliec · 13/08/2010 15:06

Thank you all so much for your advice and kind wishes! I keep thinking I want to tell someone and at least on here it feels 'safe'.

Congratulations! Here you can self refer to midwife via form you get online so not even any need to go to GP unless you want to.

PipPipPip · 13/08/2010 19:19

G'day Helliec and Bellalu,

isn't it a mental feeling? No matter how exciting/planned your pregnancy is, it still feels shocking and scary.

I'm seven weeks pregnant, and only found out a fortnight ago. I feel much more comfortable now than I did only a fortnight ago.

We decided to tell our parents fairly early - I think I needed their support/enthusiasm to reassure me. I've now told a few close friends, and their excitement has really helped me.

But my god - the two lines. Realising you're pregnant for the first time is LITERALLY a once in a lifetime moment.

Good luck,

Pip

(((blatant hijack!))) hey showofhandsGrin how are you?! lovely to see a friendly face as it were Smile Think this is the first time I have ventured on to mn since those "what should i call the baby" threads!! ds1 now age 2 and a half, and dont i know it!! First night in his big boys bed tonight, took the cot down, put the bed up and sobbed my socks off! ds2 is now 8 months, named him Isaac James Charlie Smile He is just the most chilled out happy little chap, a real poppet. Noah loves him, goes in his room in a morning to give him a kiss and says "alright gorgeous, had a nice sleepy?" all peachy here, (apart from being obiviously knackered, emotionally wrecked, fraught with worry 110% of the time, living life on the edge and just trying to get to the end of the day/ begining of the next one..........apart from that its dandy!!!!!) My two boys are my saviours xxxxxxx

LittleSilver · 17/08/2010 07:41

I've never bothered with my GP and refer myself straight to mws

kittycatcat · 17/08/2010 09:07

Hi all. Congrats everyone. I did a test this morning and there was a 2nd line. Woke DH up to get him to look at it and he said there is def two lines. Have gone through excitement, shock to is it real all in a few hours! Eek.Will do a clear blue tomorrow to re confirm. Have just booked an appt with my lovely doc for Friday Morning.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/08/2010 09:29

Congratulations!

It does depend on area. In my area you see your GP who refers you on to the midwives at your choice of hospital (not likely to see them until you are 10-11 weeks pregnant though); in other areas you can self-refer to the midwives without seeing the GP.

If it's your first pregnancy and you don't know which applies in your area, call your GP surgery and ask.
