thrush - do I use an applicator?

I've got thrush. I'm 12 weeks pg. Spoke to Doc on the phone and she just told me to go out and buy caneston pessery/cream and she says it's fine to use in pregnancy.

That's all I got from her as she was in a hurry. For some reason, I seem to think I shouldn't use an applicator whilst pregnant, but I'm not sure. I also seem to think I shouldn't stick it too far in - how far is too far/enough?

I've taken it many times in the past when not pregnant, and to be honest half the time it doesn't work for me so I'm not expecting much, but understand she wants to try it as a first port of call before considering anything else that potentially might be more harmful.

There is an issue with using the applicator in the 3rd trimester. When I was pregnant with DD this wasn't an issue and I used it a few times but didn't go deep. This time I have just used my finger to insert it to be honest as I found it hard to get the tablet in far enough using the applicator.

I had horrible thrush when I was pregnant and the GP prescribed 9 thrush tablets. It did get rid of it Smile. I used an applicator each time and it was fine.

Don't tell pharmasist you are pg as no one in my town will sell me it, got some from hospital though. I didn't use the applicator though in my last pg that was fine.

don't worry nymphadora - I got my mum to buy it for me and they didn't ask her if she was pregnant! Wink

I had a doctor prescribe me caneston for thrush when I was about 12 weeks, she advised just to use my finger. It's just in case you bash the cervix which is unlikely but manufacturers like to cover themselves so they can't be sued.

I had thrush at about 12 weeks in this pregnancy too, and Dr gave me cream and applicator. I had it again this week and a different Dr gave me a stronger dose applicator. Am 34 weeks now, but she seemed happy to prescribe it. Amazes me though that neither of the Dr's had a look to see if it was definitely thrush! Hope yours clears up soon.

thanks guys - will try it without applicator just as it might be easier. Your advice really helped :)

I have had loads of trush treatments in the past month, now 29 weeks.

For the tablet I used fingers as I could get it in easier Blush, I had some cream ones and used the applicator for that.

My dr and pharmacist said the applicator was fine just be ultra careful when using it, not to put it up too high.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 11/08/2010 21:09

The doctor told me the applicator was fine but the guidance leaflet said not so I went cautious and didn't use it.

DetectivePotato · 12/08/2010 10:05

I read the leaflet and it said not to use the applicator so I didn't, but I don't want to use my fingers so I'm still itching and the cream hasn't worked. (Wimp emotion)

I was told two different things - one midwife said it was okay to use the applicator, the other said not. I used my fingers, but even then couldn't get it up high enough. Like OP though, wasn't sure how high up was high up enough. I have been plagued with thrush.

ginger2000 · 12/08/2010 12:29

hi - have also been plagued with thrush during pg. Used the applicator first but didn't put it up high enough so it didn't go away - next time I was really careful and got it right and it clears up within 24 hours (I was about 22weeks) - good luck - its nasty!
