When were you able to squeeze a bit of colostrum out?

Last pregnancy, with DS, I was obsessed fascinated with the changes in my boobs and I started noticing little beads of colostrum by 20 weeks if I gently squeezed my aerola (I know it was 20 weeks, I remember seeing this just before a Rufus Wainwright gig that was dead on 20 wks! Grin). I think I'd been noticing it for a couple of weeks by then.

I'm 20 weeks now, and nada. Does colostrum appear at random times in different pregnancies? Would it have anything to do with bf-ing DS until about 6 wks into this pregnancy?

Am I still too obsessed with my pregnant boobs?? Grin

hmmm - am 22 weeks and other than darker nipples and bigger boobs no major changes. Do there have to be bumps on nipple for the milk to come of or will it come out anyway? Where are the bumps - on the middle bit or the surrounding bit? Feel a bit ignorant about this. x

Yellowflowers The bumps around the outer part of the areola are sebaceous glands to keep the skin moisturised. The milk comes out of the middle part from lots of little holes. When I expressed milk in my first pregnancy was amazed at how many streams of milk there were coming out from all different directions but at the moment you may be able to squeeze a bit out and you may see a few little droplet but not enough pressure/volume of milk to see that.

I didn't know if it was a 'pull my finger' type thing!!

Tried it last night and something came out of one of them, although it made me feel quesy which is worrying. I'm not good with the sight of my own blood, which will be a challenge when I give birth, but passing out every time I feed my baby could be a problem. I need to man up.

I'm 23 weeks and have had this for a few weeks. The right more than the left though.

One of my best friends who is 6 days more pregnant than me, text me to ask if I had leaky nipples. So I looked and my bra was stained (Sorry TMI)gave boobs a squeeze and their it was yellowy looking, I have to admit I was fascinated by this and kept showing DP, who thought I was a loon Grin

Sorry there too excited talking about leaky nips!

Off to buy breast pads today Smile

34 weeks now and after a cuddle I left a wet patch on DP's side of the bed the other night! Started with droplets around 18 weeks I think. I produced a ridiculous volume of colostrum last time, I remember one of the hospital midwives saying "Oh you're the one with gallons of colostrum" as if they'd been discussing me in the staffroom! Hmm

thanks cinnamongreyhound - can't believe how ignorant I am about this! Hmmm - squeezing until milk comes out makes my stomach turn a bit. May wait for it to happen naturally. Had no idea it could happen so early!

It utterly never even occured to me to try this until reading this thread... but it worked last night and I'm 19+2. Grossed myself out though and don't dare tell my DH in case it's all a bit much. I mean amazing, but still a bit creepy. I clearly have a lot to get over before this bambino arrives!!

KFW · 13/08/2010 14:33

Me neither toomuch. But since trying it out a couple of days ago and posting my comment on here, I have been glued to this thread because it's so funny!

Re DHs: I told mine about it and he seemed to be far more grown up about it than me. Blush

Glad I'm not the only one who is fascinated by squeezing the colostrum out! I first noticed it because squeezing my nipples helped stop the insane itching in them. This was about 4 weeks ago. I am now 27+5. Sometimes there is none sometimes more. It ranges from bright yellow to watery. Yuck but fascinating. x
