I am 19 weeks pregnant and have had a cold for the last 2 weeks. On Wednesday I got a temperature and then a itchy rash that began on my hands and has spread up my arms. I also got a red circle that looks like Im a bit flushed on one cheek yesterday and today it has moved to the other side. I went to the walk in centre saw a sister and I said I wanted to rule out slapped cheek because I dont believe I have ever had it. She was very dismissive and said that even if I do have it that it wont harm the baby because they are well protected. I know that is not true so I doubt her advice of simply taking paracetamol and resting. I dont know that I have the symptoms of slapped cheek but she wasnt willing to rule it out. Do I phone the midwives for a second opinion. Does it sound like I may have it? I cant seem to find much info about symptoms in adults.

You definitely should phone the midwife, or prefereably see a doctor today. The nurse you saw at the walk in centre is wrong. If Slapped cheek is suspected in a pregnant women, then a blood test should be carried out as it can in some cases be harmful. My GP didn't know this either - I had to explain it to him and he looked it up there and then on the internet. I didn't have slapped cheek, I just had a cold, and hopefully the same goes for you, but please see a doctor.

phone your midwife for advice. Or speak to an out of hours doctor.

It's Friday afternoon and things will be closing down for the weekend. If your GP won't see you as an emergency today or you can't get hold of your midwife, just go to A&E. Combination of temperature and rash doesn't sound good. And belgo is right - Slapped Cheek can be harmful and you need to have this excluded as a possibility. I really would not wait until Monday.

I phoned midwife who told me to go to doctor today. I went to doctor but they referred me for a blood test as they dont do it there. ALl the hospital blood test dept are closed until monday. I dont have a temperature anymore and the doctor said that as one side had faded it is unlikely to be slapped cheek but wanted to rule it out. As far as I know I havent been in contact with anybody who has it.

Very glad you managed to see someone. If you feel worse over the weekend, rash gets worse, any other symptoms, temperature comes back, please go to A&E. Good luck!! X

Definitely go for the blood test - and see if your midwife will refer you to a consultant.

My DD (2) had slapped cheek when I was about 20 weeks and the only symptom I had was a rash on my arms. I didn't have the blood test as in my area they're not thought to be reliable however I was referred for extra scans to monitor the baby.

At 34 weeks I was signed off by that consultant (still seeing another!) but from the information they gathered from the scans they said that there was no indication that it had transferred to the baby.

Best to be safe, and be prepared to be firm when you ask for a referral.
