Breech Baby! Options?

I'm be 34 weeks tomorrow.

MW has said that baby is breech and to go back in 2 weeks. If baby still breech then I'll be sent for a scan.

The MW led me to believe that if baby was still breech then that I will have 2 options.

  1. Have the baby turned.

  2. Opt for a c-section.

I'm really not sure what I think. I've heard uch horror stories about broken bones and dislicated (sp?) joints in the baby after being turned but otoh I know a c-section is major surgery and it takes longer to recover from but I'm still really unsure of what to do if and when the time comes.

Anyone have any advice/experience?

it does depend too on what kind of breech it is

as ruthchan said further down. if it is literally feet first then vaginal birth may not be an option.
i think it's because it can start to be born before you are fully dilated? if it is bum first then that acts much as the head would if it was head down

if you're up for watching some birth action then seach on youtube, there are some amazing videos of vaginal breech births on there

re: tears. my tear with ds1 hurt less than my grazes with ds3!

If the presentation is not frank, then the labour is highly unlikely to progress, and then you know to have a c-section. The risks are pretty low.

My baby was turned at 37 wks. Worked fine and was born a week later still head down.

Also, OP, I've had 2 episiotomies (when they were the done thing) and one tear with a labial graze too (ds had his hand up by his face & v sharp nails!). I can categorically tell you that the graze was umpteen times more painful than the tear / cut.

In my case, I had a very minor graze, which was stitched up, but no tearing.
(It was DS's ears that did it!!)

DS was born feet first. Yes, I think they did start to come out before I was fully dilated, but the entire labour and birth lasted less than an hour, so it's difficult to tell.

DH caught DS's body as he came out and held it until the ambulance arrived and the doc delivered his head. DS's neck suffered no problems at all from this.
That was the least of our problems as he was 5 weeks early and we were far more worried about getting him breathing and keeping his scrawny little body warm.

With regards to encouraging turning, one other thing you can do is lie on your back with your pelvis raised on cushions. Should do this for about 10 mins a day, but no more apparently.
