any dentists here? have toothache but dentist unwilling to do anything while I'm PG

I went to the dentist a few weeks ago, as I had an abcess on my gum (around a lower molar).
He confirmed that it's an abcess, and 'tooth' is probably infected. It's a crown on an old root canal treatment. Has become infected before, and I had to have quite a lot of work done on previous infection.
At the time, the actual tooth wasn't giving me any pain, and he was unwilling to do anything about it as he would have to x-ray it, and didn't want to do it while I was pregnant.

I'm now 32+4 weeks, and my tooth has been hurting for a few days! Mostly just if I eat using it.

Should I just ignore it and hope it goes away??
Should I book ANOTHER appointment about it (only to be told he can't do anything about it)

any advice really really appreciated! feeling a bit miserable, and worried it might get worse. Childbirth with toothache???

Toothache with an abcess at full steam is worse than childbirth! If it was me I would be booking an appointment at the dentist fast because you can't take much by way of painkillers when pregnant. Really hope someone can help you professionally and sort it out

book another appt and ask for some antibiotics. if there is an abcess you will need to try and get rid of all the infection before they'll do anything I think

you CAN have dental treatment while pregnant, tho they tend not to as long as the tooth isn't troubling you.
i've had root canal treatment, and an extraction whilst pregnant

I didn't have an abscess but did have a tooth disintegrate whilst pregnant and had it extracted - is this a possibility or does the abscess need to be treated in isolation of the tooth? Maybe book an another appt - can you see a different dentist to get a second opinion?

thanks everyone!

just feel a bit embarassed about booking ANOTHER appointment, if he's just going to tell me to try and live with it...

the abcess seems to have gone down now. am just left with toothache. well... more a sensitive tooth. but definitely can't chew using it. that really DOES hurt.

i think part of the problem was that, because i had no pain, he wasn't sure that it was definitely the tooth that had given me trouble before (hence the need for an x-ray)

but maybe now i know which tooth it is something can be done?
guess i just have to go for it, and try and book an apoointment.
oh dear (bit scared in a limp lettuce kind of way! )

I also had a tooth extracted when I was about 30 weeks pregnant if you are in pain you need to be treated. An abscess needs treating with antibiotics and untreated abscess can be dangerous!

*an not and

Get Antibiotics! The potential risk from the an infected tooth is much greater than from any treatment you may need.

If the dentist won't treat, find another.

Risks MAY include premature labour(any type of infection in your body seems to raise the risk of pre-term labour, but it's not a huge risk) and potentially problems for you too.

Maybe the tooth will settle on it's own - but it will probably continue with a low grade infection until it's properly dealt with - and that's not a good idea while pregnant IMO.

My (private) dentist will do everything and anything, I guess because I pay him sh!t loads
Desperate to stick me a filling in today at 34 weeks, persevere!

dentist now!, if your in pain get an emergency appointment, If you leave it, you could end up in a lot of pain before the end of the weekend. Full blown Absesses are the worst pain ever...

He will give you antibiotics, safe pg ones, then pull the tooth out next week probably.

sillysow · 06/08/2010 10:17

I had a similar prob in the fact that my private dentist would not treat me at 30 wks, by the time 2 wks post labour the prob was a lot more significant.

If I knew what I had since learnt I would have pushed for treatment rather than just rolling over Hmm

Sorry to hear you're in pain.

I would definately either get another appointment & insist on treatment or look for another dentist.

When i was pregnant with my first child i had an awful toothache, so painful that i was willing the time i could take my next set of painkillers.

I went to the emergency dentist at my local hospital as it was a Sunday. They didn't want to do anything & sent me on my way.

Come Monday i was in extreme pain & left work early & went to the dentist. She did an x-ray & found a big cyst in my gum just above my front top teeth. My face swelled up & i looked liked elephant woman.... not a pretty look.

I was referred straight to the hospital dentist, where they cut my gum, drained the cyst & packed it. I was begging them to just remove my front teeth.... so glad they didn't agree lol.

I then had root canal treatment after that at my dentist.

If its causing you pain you really need to get it sorted. I don't see why you should stuff in pain.

Get back to the dentist and demand treatment - you can totally have dental work whilst preganant. I have a tooth extraction at 14 weeks - the actuall extraction was fine as I had local anesthtic which is safe in pregnancy. you can take paracetamol afterwards also, although I restrcited myself to one dose as I wasn't keen, but sure I could have had more if I'd wanted. The dentist intially wasn't keen to do the extraction but as soon as the tooth got worse he agreed. Their main worry is the stress will send you into labour - but our bodies can tell a heck of a lot fo stress before that happens. In fact extreme stress can actually cause labour to pause!
