Ok so, 22 weeks pregnant, just bought a wrap from our canteen. Had lettuce in it which tasted vaguely muddy/off so I took the lettuce out and finished it.

Now Im thinking should I have done that or just not eaten it? And Id already taken 2 mouthfuls of it before I even noticed the weird taste! Cant be sure if it was unwashed or just old.

Personally I would not worry too much, for starters there was probably nothing 'off' about the lettuce, it is amazing how many foods smelt or tasted off to me in early to mid pregnancy, there was hardly any meal which didnt put me off.

When i was preg with DS 1 I know for a fact that i ate mouldy cherry tomatoes, they were actually covered in a green fuzz (!!) I had alrerady eaten them when I noticed the fuzz on the remaining ones! I was completely freaked out but all was fine, never even got an upset tummy.

I would be more worried if you had eaten obviously spoiled cheese or meat to be honest.

Im just a bit concerned because I read in Love It (please dont judge me on my terrible literature choices) that a woman caught toxo from unwashed lettuce.

There was definately something off about it. Even before I was pregnant I could smell/taste like a wolf!

I believe that toxo mostly affects meat products, but I suppose as it is also carried in cat faeces it could contaminate stuff in the soil.

Have just googled and it seems as though about 30% of women are already immune and would not experience any problem if re-infected.

If you did pick it up it seems like the greatest risk to babay is third trimester.

Apparently you can ask your GP to do a blood test to check whether a) you are already immune and b) if you have aquired a new infection, in which case am presuming it can be treated?

Listeria would be your worry, not toxo, but that would be if the lettuce would have been contaminated with it, not just because it was a bit old.
