Baby on wrong side

Hi everyone,

Had 33 week scan yesterday, everything fine and baby head down.

However the Doctor said to me that she is on the wrong side. Her spine is on the right hand side of my bump, he says it should be on the left.
When I asked him what this would mean he said that I still should be able to deliver OK, just that it may be harder

There is a bit of a language barrier so he probably didn't want to go into the technical stuff too much but does anyone know what this means?

I know that there is still plently of time for her to turn round but I'm wondering if sleeping on my RHS (the only way I can sleep at the minute) is encouraging her to lie like this. Any tips on getting her to shuffle over?

Thanks

HUH?!?!?!??? Mine (32 weeks) is also head down but spine to the right.... No one's said anything to me about it. Oh Gawd.....

That doesn't sound right -- my baby 30 weeks) is also spine to the right, and I'm pretty sure my two previous pregnancies that's where the baby was most of the time by the end.

I wasn't aware that right or left was better, I thought it was more of an issue of front or back facing. My baby usually has his spine to the front left, but sometimes turns and puts it on the right. At my 38 week check the midwife was happy with this as he was more or less back to my front.

Anyhow at 33 weeks I wouldn't worry at all, baby could still move loads. I have also noticed that mine swings side to side more as he engages, like he is wriggling on down.

This might help www.naturalbirthandbabycare.com/baby-position.html it mentions right or left positioning, but doesn't suggest either is better.

www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/labourandbirth/planningyourbabysbirth/babyinpositionforbirth/ This might also help if you wanted to try and reposition your baby more centrally.

Left is supposed to be easier to deliver but I can't remember why and I think that's why they reccommend you try and lie on your left. My baby is frequently swapping sides. I try and sleep on my left but eventually when the left hand side of my body goes numb I have to swap. x

PickleSarnie · 05/08/2010 13:46

I got told the same thing and was told to sleep on my left side too. Which is, as monkeychicken says, fine until you loose all circulation to your left hand side and have to move.

The midwife just said it was best if it moved but didn't seem overly concerned. I left wishing I'd asked why it should be facing the opposite direction though.

To be honest, it's futile worrying about it at this early stage, as you have a good 4 weeks to go before the baby gets into any sort of position that it is likely to stay in for labour. This happens around 37 weeks.

The baby will change position lots before then, so even if s/he gets into an optimal position, it'll no doubt only be temporary.

I mean, my baby has moved from back-to-the-left to back-to-the-right since 37 weeks, so even after then, it can still move.

5DollarShake · 05/08/2010 13:53

Soz - that should be the other way round - her back is now to the left apparently, and that has only happened in the last few days. I am 40+1.

I'm glad you posted this as my GP confirmed this morning what I had suspected that my baby is spine to the right as well (and head down). I was reading the Spinning Babies website and apparently it does matter and is better if they are on the right. Unfortunately I find the website quite poorly drafted so find it difficult to see which positions to adopt now to encourage baby to move over. Mine is a stubborn little fella cause I have been sleeping on my left hand side only for 6 months now!

RunningGuerita · 05/08/2010 16:31

Sorry better if they are on the left.

CityChildminder · 05/08/2010 16:39

there are things you can do to encourage her to turn - such as sleeping on your left, swimming on your front (if you swim) and crawling around on all fours! Also getting in a position where your bum is higher than your head can help. My dc3 was in this position and the labour was harder but tbh I didn't take my own advice and encourage her to turn as I thought she would naturally but didn't - I will this time though if my baby is lying the same way! Good Luck.

breatheslowly · 05/08/2010 16:51

Mine is on my right and at 36 week scan I was told that my placenta is on the left which might be why the baby is on the right. The sonographer (also trained as MW) didn't seem bothered.

marzipananimal · 06/08/2010 10:12

babies have to turn during the birth process, and apparently babies whose backs are to the right are slightly more likely to go the long way round, thus making labour longer and harder. I think it's quite a small factor though so although I've been trying (and usually failing) to sleep on my left, I'm not too worried
