Expectant Monitoring

Come and tell me what I need to know about expectant monitoring. In particular what they look for and how frequently they need to look at it

----------
Good News.
Baby has moved again now LOA and not engaged, rather than OP

Not as Good News
I am only 40 + 8 over by scan dates, midwife record has me down for 40 + 9 instead...go figure.

Just had an interesting conversation with a community midwife this morning. She said oh you are 40 + 9, we'll have to book your induction.

I said I didn't want to be induced now and I would like to wait and see if baby turns up on his/her own over the next few days and if nothing happens I would like to go for expectant monitoring from 42 weeks.

Midwife insists she needs to book me in for an inducement even if I choose to cancel it later. I agreed that is fine, I don't want the midwife in trouble, happy to cancel the inducement when I get home from the doctors.

She chats to the hospital who decided the only possible inducement date has to be tomorrow morning at 9am. Midwife falters and back tracks, saying that as she knows I wouldn't go in tomorrow, so there is no point booking me in. More muttering on the phone. Midwife smiles at me again and tells the hospital that she didn't think I would go in on Monday either.

She wants me to see the consultant but his next clinic is 42 weeks, which is fine with me but not for them.

So apparently I can't book another midwife appointment for next week with the community midwifes, as officially I am in inducement territory.

So I am awaiting a phone call from the community midwife as to what we do next. She thinks it will be a meeting with the consultant about inducement which is just a big waste of his time. I know the risks of inducement especially following an C section and unless there is a medical need will not agree to a social inducement based on dates only.

Personally I just want to wait 5 days and see if baby turns up and if not do the expectant monitoring.

Maybe labour will start soon, now the baby is no longer OP...

Oh hurrah! Sounds like things are moving along.

Tell you what, if you want a baby, would you like mine? She has the nocturnal sleeping patterns of a newborn but without the copious runny baby poo.

Babieseverywhere · 11/08/2010 11:06

Totally want your DD2, post her to me will you. I need to sniff baby hair Grin

Congratulations on your little girl Smile Sorry to hear she's poorly, sorry I don't know what hdn is? I hope she gets better and is back with you very very soon xx

mears · 14/08/2010 12:36

Have been wondering what had happened. Congratulations on your DD. Hope she is being well cared for. As you know I have been there with HDN. It will resolve eventually but takes some time. (HDN - haemolyic disease of the newborn which is severe jaundice)

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 15/08/2010 14:22

Oh BE congratulations!!!!

Wishing her and you all the best, hope she is in your arms soon xxxxxx

Hi, RL friend of BE here.

BE and her dd2 are home, the baby is much better but she is now poorly herself.

Not sure how much info she wants me to pass on so I'll leave it there for now until I've spoken to her again.

I will let her know that you've been asking after her, I'm sure it will help her feel better :)

mears · 16/08/2010 17:03

Thanks TigerFeet. Ask her to CAT me if she feels able.

TigerFeet · 16/08/2010 17:08

I will Mears :)

Birth Announcement

Thanks for posting {{{Tigerfeet}}}

Mears, Any info you have on HDN would be welcome. I am assuming she has the mild version of HDN. Just a few days under the lights and loads of breastmilk. I was force feeding encouraging both my older nurseling to feed as much as possible at vistoring time, so my milk would come in fast.

Would like to know if there are any long term concerns / treatment etc. We have appointments for 2 and 6 weeks for tests and possible treatment they said, no details.

Not sure if I am up to date on CAT, I'll have a look.

My experience was that DS3 and DD1 were seen at paediatric clinic on a regular basis and a full blood count taken. Folic acid continued for 16 weeks. DS3 was very anaemic at 6 weeks old and required a blood transfusion. He was preterm and under phototherapy for a week after birth. DD1 has 3 exchange blood transfusions after birth and her haemaglobin continued to drop until she was 12 weeks old. She didn't need any more blood. The antibodies stay in the circulation for 3 months but eventually disappear. The antibodies cause further breakdown of the babies red blood cells hence why yje full blood count gets checked. They will keep monitoring it until it starts to rise. At that point the antibodies have gone and the baby is producing it's won red cells with no problems (folic acid helps that process). There are no ongoing implications thereafter. HTH.

Thank you that is really reassuring. Grin

You have given me a lot more information to work with, I didn't even know know why we are giving her folic acid !
