I am 39+2wks with dc2. DD was an emcs. This time i was hoping to have a vbac.

I have just got back from the MW. Baby has been 3/5 engaged for the last 2 apps and i have been measuring spot on for dates. Today i am measuring 3 weeks over, the baby is completely free and she thinks there is no chance of this baby coming until the planned section at 40+10.

She doesn't need to see me again she says. I am to just wait it out.

So if i can't have my VBAC, i am measuring big, what is the benefit of waiting for the section at 40+10? Why not just refer me back to the consultant?

Completely stressed about this and not sure if there is anything i can/should be doing.

Didn't want this to go unanswered but I don't really have any advice!

I would guess though at this late stage the only way you would have the baby sooner than the date you are already booked in for would be in an emergency just becuase the hospital won't have space in the theatre etc?

Seems odd that she does not want to see you in a few days time though...?

I had to be admitted onto a ward for almost a week before they could even induce me last time due to lack of midwives/doctors/etc

There's not reason to think you can't have your VBAC.
AFAIK it is not terribly unusual for the head to be bobbing free at this stage, esp with a second baby.

I find it slightly ridiculous when HCPs make pronouncements about whether or not women will go into labour naturally because they don't know.

The benefit of waiting is that you might go into labour by yourself. The measurements may not be right.

I think you should just sit tight, forget what she said and think positively. If you want a cs, call the hospital and schedule one for 40 weeks, but seriously one MW's opinion really isn't a reason to go for an elcs if you actually want a VBAC.

Good luck, I hope you get whatever birth you want.

Why do you have to have a planned section? Would they not be happy to induce you at 40+10?

peppapighastakenovermylife · 04/08/2010 21:14

Erm - no logic to me there.

Lots of second babies do not engage until labour - and lots bob in and out. Mine does it daily - is a right pain! As MW kindly pointed out I am 'stomach muscley challenged' as it is DC3

If baby was engaged and they measured your bump, then baby was not engaged it will measure bigger.

Why did she not think you would go into labour til then? When did you go into labour the first time?

I am nearly 39 weeks and he wasn't engaged today - she didnt make any comment about when as simply no one knows.

With DD (DC2) she did not engage until labour (on my due date). DS did not engage until labour either - he was DC1 and a week early!

deemented - it's a VBAC so I imagine they wouldn't be keen to induce because of the increased risk of rupture.

I've had a vbac and after that an induced vbac and the risks of uterine rupture are quite small indeed.

Hello, thank you for replying

In the end i rang the antenatal clinic at the maternity hospital who was lovely and suggested i come in to see a MW that afternoon.

I went in, was re-measured at 38cm and MW had a feel of my bump.

She said that all was fine, baby feels a healthy size and will most likely be a bit bigger than DD but was not huge. I didn't look big and as long as i felt healthy and was happy physically then that was good.

The other issue, the vbac, she said would be worth me having a consultant appointment next week.
I am having a wobble about it anyway and i had planned to ask my mw a couple of questions about it all at my appointment but when i mentioned i was worried about it, she basically said that there was no point worrying as chances are i would be having my cs at 40+10. She then wrote on my notes "Happy to let nature take it's course"

So appointment now next week at 40+1 where i can be checked, talk through the vbac and my worries and have a sweep done if i want to. Feeling a lot happier about it all

Oh, and at my hospital they do not induce vbac's.
