I'm 41 weeks and 4 days pregnant with my first baby and have had a normal uneventful pregnancy. I have had 2 sweeps and so far have no signs of baby wanting to come out! Midwife has booked my induction for Tuesday next week but i'm really hoping baby will come out naturally over the next couple of days.

I've been told i have to go to the hospital the night before i'm being induced. Does anyone know why this is? I don't really want to spend the night on my own with my OH as i'm going to be a bundle of nerves as it is!

Is it true if you're induced your labour will be longer and more painful?

Any advice/experiences shared will be much appreciated! xxx

They usually insert the first induction pessary in the evening and they don't expect anything much to happen overnight - if it does they'll call your OH in for you.

I don't think established labour is longer it cna just take a long time to get into established labour - 3 pessaries each 6 hours apart and often you are in mild pain from the pessaries without being in established labour.

I've had 4 inductions they've all been different so no hard and fast rules, but they've all been straightforward deliveries not needing assistance

Not sure about going in overnight, when I was induced had to get there at 7 in the morning as they dont like to 'waste' a bed but wont let you go home once they've put first pessary in. You could ask to go in the morning, it's your choice isnt it? I had a really good last nights sleep which I was glad of in the following days.

I was induced on due date with DC2 because of reduced foetal movements. Had first pessary inserted at 9am, in established labour by 3 pm and she was born just after midnight. This was a shorter labour than with DC1 but I have to say it was more painful initially as had contractions every 4 minutes straight away. I had an epidural and she was assisted to arrive with forceps.

Was different to DC1 but not worse, I felt very well looked after as had someone around all the time. I got sent home with DC1 and laboured at home all day while looking after DSS's so much preferred being in hospital with no one else to worry about.

Still a few days to go til Tuesday though, there's every chance you wont need to worry about being induced! Go for a long walk and then, if OH up to it and you can bear it, then I found with DC1 and DC3 that the way they got in was a good way to prompt them to come out . Good luck

Thanks for both replies! I meant to type i didnt want to spend the night WITHOUT my OH! its always a comfort having him nearby!

Ballstoit you're right, a lot can still happen over the weekend! And i think if i do have to go in to be induced it'll be a comfort having people there watching over me.

I got told to come in first thing in the morning, as did my sister in law. We were both done straight off with the drip stuff and there was an issue over beds. If you really don't want to go in the night before then express this and open up the discussion for alternative options - your body, your birth, your baby (I am trying very hard to remember this myself as I think I suffered unnecessarily last time as I just did as I was told and was too in awe of the whole process/hospital thing to express my opinions)

I can't believe they went straight for the drip

I only went in the evening for my first baby, with the others I had to go in first thing in the morning - one they started me off at 8am, the other 2 there weren't enough beds/staff free so ended up waiting until lunchtime before they got started!

Hi all! Just wanted to let u all know my contractions started saturday evening! unfortunately it was a very slow labour, they ended up breaking my waters and putting me on a drip to help things along. My baby boy was born 4.35am on tuesday 3rd! It was long and i ended up having an epidural to help with the pain relief but its so worth it!

Thanks for your messages. Jenny95 i hope all goes well for you if u havent already given birth!!

xx
