Ok - I realise I can dress my baby in whatever I want - but is it odd to dress newborn girl in blue?

Just seen adorable outfit online, in sale, that i know my DH will LOVE - but don't know sex of baby - and outfit is blue.... so debating issue in head, but didn't come up with answer!

It depends on the outfit. Can we have a link?

babynelly2010 · 29/07/2010 21:19

No I don't think so if it is a lighter softer blue, unless it says something on it indicating boy gender.
We don't know the gender of our baby yet but already got some outfits, some yellow, some white, some green and many baby blue.
I think it would be odd to dress your boy in pink but a girl in baby blue is cute.

I have been looking for girly aqua / turquoise stuff, and have got a few pieces which are sort of unisex - polka dots, some animal characters etc. I think unless an outfit is explicitly boyish in design - slogans, tractors and such - a girl will look just as adorable in it.

I decided before I knew mine was a boy, that he would be wearing the mothercare dinosaur and monster ranges regardless

MadameCheese · 29/07/2010 23:02

go for it, there's nothing wrong with girls in blue, a boy in pink however...

Octaviapink · 30/07/2010 07:35

My dd looks just as adorable in tractors and sharks!

cinnamongreyhound · 30/07/2010 08:26

As long as you don't mind people calling her he, go for it. People make a lot of assumptions!

EasilyConfusedIndith · 30/07/2010 08:28

Dd has a big brother, she wore a lot of blue as a baby!

PickleSarnie · 30/07/2010 09:06

How about these for breaking down the gender barriers? twistedtwee.co.uk/equal-opportunity-babygrows-c-23.html

mamaloco · 30/07/2010 09:12

Both DDs wore a lot of bleu, dresses and pants. And some tipical boy outfits mainly shorts and pants with girly tops... It doesn't matter!
Girls love tractors and dinosaures too

mousymouse · 30/07/2010 09:13

dd is wearing blue a lot, but she has a big brother and 3 boy cousins so the stuff is recycled. I do not see a problem with that, would prefer gender neutral, though, but I don*t want to buy extra stuff for her when I have a drawer full of functional clothes. and "granny-shopaholic" is buying girly stuff occasionally anyway.

CupcakesHay · 30/07/2010 09:15

Well - I bought it. So very pleased now. of course, this'll be a moot point if i have a boy!

I think you should absolutely buy it. Who says girls can't wear blue? I read somewhere that girls always used to be put in blue (considered to be a more delicate colour) before pink became the colour of choice for commercial reasons (Barbie sales etc)

I just recently had this conversation with DH. We don't know the sex of our (first) baby and when we were shopping for babygrows we found some lovely ones with pale blue stripes. Dh wavered about getting them whereas I couldn't really see the problem. I wear blue a fair bit as an adult, so why shouldn't it be ok as a baby. Plus, as others have said, its not that long since pink was seen as the traditional boy colour and blue as the colour for little girls...

fluffles · 30/07/2010 09:29

absolutley fine imo but then don't get all precious and offfended if people don't know the sex and call your baby 'he'..

personally i would go with blue and would not at all be offended if people asked or used 'he' but i've seen threads on here where people are really offended by people getting it wrong. so it depends on you i think.

LooL00 · 30/07/2010 09:29

Dh wears pale pink shirts for work with a suit and so i never worried about putting ds in a pink hand me down babygro if nothing else was clean. I wouldn't have bought them for him though. dd had a blue smocked dress at one point, certainly not meant for boys and dc3 wears white babygros the whole time ( age 4w) and I never get round to putting her in cute outfits that may be itchy or uncomfortable.if you really want it then buy it but you may find she never wears it as babygros are easier.

gingerkirsty · 30/07/2010 09:51

People still ask me 'boy or girl' when DD is wearing pink or a dress - and in spite of the fact that she is so pretty there's no way she could possibly be a boy .
So I say go for it, it makes no difference!
