Anomaly scan today - fluid on the brain

I wonder if anyone has had experience of this.

I had my anomaly scan this afternoon - they told me I was having a boy and that all his major organs are fine. The consultant kept looking at the head and got a sonographer to
confirm that there was fluid on the brain.

He explained that is was a symptom of Spina Bifida but both of them checked the spine and it looked perfect. Also the baby was bouncing around and waving his arms and legs.
We have another scan booked for next Tuesday with a specialist.

Our son is a miracle to us - he is the result of IVF after four miscarriages.

We are upset but trying to keep it together
and our son will be loved no matter what.

Has anyone else had experience of this?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Penfoldsglasses. Sorry for the delay. Are you online now? I can post an email address you can contact me on, but I'll get mn to delete it once you've seen it. I haven't paid the £5 so can't use the CAT facility to contact you (end of month )

Hi Rolf I remember you posting when I had ds! glad to hear that your dd is doing so well.

PenfoldsGlasses, at our anomaly scan we were also told that our ds had fluid on the brain. In the end he turned out to have a skeletal dysplasia ("short-limbed dwarfism"). He is now four and doing very well - yes he is short and has some difficulties, but he is gorgeous and sweet and lovely. Fluid on the brain can mean many things, but might mean nothing "bad" at all. Good luck to you x

To everyone who "scraped me off the ceiling" last Thursday - thank you.

We went to our scan this afternoon with the specialist, he checked my baby over and confirmed that it is hydrocephalus. Everything else is perfect and is, as much as a scan can give, ruled out. The specialist was fantastic, explained everything thoroughly and we got to meet a paedtrician to answer all our questions too.
We will be having more scans regulary to keep an eye on him and his progress.

I feel alot calmer now, we have accepted our baby will need extra attention but will be adored no matter what.

I hope I can help other ladies in the future like you have helped me.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I am glad that they didn't find anything else wrong (that's very good news) and at least you know what you are dealing with now. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is a little easier now, and just wishing you lots of love, your baby has a very special mummy!

Chooster · 03/08/2010 21:03

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis but very pleased to hear you had excellent care and that everything was thoroughly explained to you. Thats the most important thing at this stage. Hopefully the outcome for your little boy is very positive - he's a lucky one to have such strong loving parents . Best of luck to all of you and I hope the rest of your pregnancy is more relaxing.

Also, I wasn't necessarily going to mention this as I didn't want to give mis-leading information but my close friend had something similar with her daughter. She had fluid on the brain and (I think) enlarged ventricles... I don't know if she had a formal diagnosis of hydrocephalus but it was discussed. She was scanned and monitored and the baby had numerous tests included specific brain scans. The fluid slowly reduced towards the end of her pregnancy but never fully disappeared. Her DD was born perfectly healthy and still is... I truly hope that a similarly positive outcome happens for you.

So pleased about this .

I haven't forgotten the CDs and will get them off to you as soon as poss.

Hi,
Our DS who is now nearly 3 has hydrocephalus. Not congenital as it seems to be with your little one but acquired (forcep delivery/skull fracture/brain haemorrhage/blocked CSF drainage = hydro). By all accounts was moderate/severe. He had reservoir fitted at 10 days to manage pressure and shunt at 5 months.

We have been lucky and he is fine. He's perfectly average now - he was towards the later stages of average for walking (2) talking in sentences (2.5). Some things he's even advanced in - fine motor skills (upper body) & from 2 could name every colour and I mean every (silver/grey/beige!) I got told off for saying blue when it was either light/dark blue...

We found 'Hydrocephalus; A guide for Patients, Families & Friends' by Toporek & Robinson (who has Hydrocephalus herself) really helpful.

I know we've been really lucky as our DS is doing so well, Hydrocephalus effects eveyone in different ways. I don't want to underestimate the stress of having your baby go through neurosurgery and the constant awareness of the shunt stays with us. It has been fine but we know there'll be a day when it blocks or fails. We were treated at Addenbrookes, Cambridge and I can't even begin to tell you how truely fantastic they were.

We enjoy our DS, try not to worry & are grateful for the help & support of our friends and family.
I really wish you all the best x
