I had to book in at a new hospital as we moved to a new area. So I had the booking in appt a little late. Started off with her wieghing me and saying my bmi was a little high - I am 39 weeks pregnant surely this is to be expected? I was overweight to start with but size 14 so not mega overweight seems a little unfair to give me advice on healthy eating and mark me as high risk at this stage!? so that didnt put me in a good mood.

I was supposed to be having a sweep today but the midwife (checked with doctor) and refused to do it because the baby is not engaged and is high up still. She said it would be too dangerous in case my waters broke and the cord came down first or she suddenly turned sideways etc. So I didnt get my sweep.

Then she said that since my other babies have not engaged before labour and this one seems to be bobbing up and down (her head was nearly as high as my belly button today) it "must" be something to do with the shape of my pelvis so I could easily go into labour at home but that if my waters broke at home I would have to call them as they may want me to go in by ambulance .

I am supposed to be getting induced next wednesday (on my due date) and aparently they will still do that BUT they might want to break my waters "under controlled circumstances" which means someone holding the had in postion (how the hell they do that I dont know) and the possibility of an emergency c section.

SO now i am just on the verge of tears - too fat, wrong shaped pelvis and no closer to labour than i was this morning . And now worrying about something goign wrong with the birth.

Ok well she could be wrong about the pelvis as my babies didn't engaged before but this one dc3 has been 3/5 engaged since 28 weeks!

She is also very mean about your weight and i think you would be wise to pop her 'advice' somewhere appropriate!

I'm afraid i don't know much about the iduction or c-section side of things but would just say that if you aren't sure about anything said or don't agree then speak up. If you don't feel able to question them or ask for clarification maybe take someone more assertive with you who would be happy to raise things on yor behalf. A list of questions written down can also help.

And good luck with the birth!

She was right about the risk of breaking your waters though and the cord coming down before the baby's head - surely being careful is a good thing? Sounds like she was a little tactless though.

Why is it that you're being induced early?

I thought most third babies did not engage until labour? Mine certainly bobs in and out.

Ok so the risks she talked about are risks - but I thought very small ones. Seems like she is being over cautious?

As for the BMI that is just daft. Say you had a BMI of 24 before pregnancy so were not overweight but put on 2.5 stone (within recommendations) then I'm sure you would then be into the obese category?!
