anxious about movement

Since my last mid-wife appointment I have been absolutely fine but since she has said to count movements I'm beginning to worry when I don't feel anything. All weekend I did nothing and was very lazy watching tv and there was way more movement thean 10 per day it was really good. When I am at work its rather less obvious, I think it is 10 but the movements are smaller and I don't feel so happy about it. Could it be my baby is happier when I am at home? I think I probably am getting 10 movements a day but not sure when I should start to really panic. I am going to try and start counting again from today.
Does anyone have any advice? I am 26wks

It's probably more that when you're at work, you're distracted so don't always notice smaller movements. I do know that the advice if you don't think you can feel the baby is to sit down quietly and have a cold drink (to wake the baby up) - if you're sitting quietly not doing anything you're more likely to notice the movements. If you're getting 10 a day, I'd try not to worry.

It's very easy to worry about this - I think the babies have several days where they don't move much, as I have just had this. And as soon as I started really worrying about it, I have felt him loads last night and today. The movement has all changed though - it's now really low down and I'm wondering if he has turned. Am 28 weeks and have mw app today so will ask her.

As japhrimel says, you will be more distracted at work. Sometimes after a morning of running around after my 3 yr old I think "have I felt the baby AT ALL this morning?".

I have had similar worries myself as my baby goes several hours without moving (am 28 weeks). I have been reassured that you do not always have to count 10 movements a day (but do check this out again for yourself), which a midwife had told also me and it really worried me.

If you are really concerned you can call the midwives and they will check you out- I have done this twice and they let me listen to the heartbeat and then last week they put me on a monitor where you can hear the movements and the machine counts them (cant remember the name of it). I have been encouraged to call any time I am concerend that I've not felt enought movement and no one has treated me like I'm overeacting.

So just to let you know you can get that reassurance if you need it. Some babies are just not as active as others though- am hoping this means they are nice and calm when they arrive! All the best.

Also when you are at work and moving about baby will be lulled to sleep by your movements. Thats why they always seem to wake up when we go to bed!

I think 26 weeks is early to be monitoring movements properly - my MW suggested starting from 30 weeks (I didn't feel any movements at all until 24/5 weeks and CERTAINLY not 10 a day at 26 weeks).

I have exactly the same thing now though (I am 32 weeks): at home, when relaxing, I feel loads of movements, but feel many less while at work.

At my desk, I jot down movements on a post it note (you know, like a tally: IIII) and take 5 mins or so in the afternoon to sit back in my chair and prod the baby to make it move!

Also, my baby seems to have sleepy days and busy days....

The advice is get it checked out if there is any change in pattern. It DOES NOT matter if you are before 30 wks!

I have posted a similar thread not long back and I was lucky. If in doubt, get yourself checked. MWs won't care if they see you lots of times for this: I have had 2 different periods of reduced movements, first when I was 26 weeks: the last one (33 weeks) was a weekend on a CTG and scan to check placenta was working. It is, that's why I am lucky but if it isn't you need to know sooner than later.

Yes, babies do have quieter days, but I cannot say enough the importance of allaying anxieties by seeing a professional.

Thanks for your advice. After an hour or so this morning the movements increased today and have been very frequent and more than 10 so I am a lot happier. Typically it is a day off from work so when I go to work tomorrow I will try and keep a tally to ease my mind. It is one of those things you work yourself up into thinking is this a problem and then it starts to sort itself out so fingers crossed all is well.

Catbus- are you a fan of Totoro?

I did a sticker chart in my last pregnancy after a lack of movement scare and carried it everywhere, I found it really reassuring and very easy to just put a sticker on the sheet every time I felt a movement - was quite amazed at how many movements there really were in a day!
