Does anyone else feel guilty about

their increased appetite? I was just reading Rocklover's post about disliking your own body during pregnancy, and, after posting what I hope was an encouraging reply, realised I have issues of my own.

I know that one's appetite increases during pregnancy, but I still feel guilty about wanting to eat more than I do when not pregnant. And the strange thing is that it isn't even as though I want to eat terribly unhealthy things. For example, at the moment, cherry tomatoes disappear if I get anywhere near them (dear FIL sometimes puts a bowl of them just for me on the table when we go round for dinner visits).

I suppose I keep feeling guilty when I feel hungry at times I'm not 'supposed' to or want more at any meal than I feel I should. Anyone else feel this or have advice?

go with the flow!

how far are you? during my 1st trimester i was eating 2 full evening meals i was just so hungry! its decreased now tho.

as long as your not eating for the sake of it and eating when your hungry its food that your body and baby needs.

just go with it

5 weeks here, so very early days, and I am totally ravenous.

I have just scoffed my way through a huge bag of pistachios with a male colleague

slimyak · 27/07/2010 13:40

I would say go with what suits you. You are not text book and your baby won't be either.

Be proud of your cherry tomato eating. You and maybe your baby will have great skin and a healthy immune system as well as being well hydrated.

I'm danagerous near a fruit bowl at the moment. I'd be just as bad near a family pack of crisps so I shimmy towards the friut for the sake of my blood pressure.

Don't forget you are supposed to eat more - you're growing a whole new person! If it's guilt/embarrasment at eating more just say "this is for the baby" and tuck in. I'm sure your FIL will feel happily involved to provide extra toms for his unborn grandchild.

I think things all even out. Ate like a horse in the first trimester, not so much in the 2nd because of hideous acid indigestion which put me off and if the last pg is anything to go by the 3rd will involve very little food.

I've always thought that making me eat loads to start with is my bodies way of helping me store up for the rest of the pg. If you're hungry eat that's what's important.

Rocklover · 27/07/2010 14:53

I am eating all the time (some healthy stuff, some not), if I don't eat, I feel sick. It's a bloody vicious circle. I hope that when the nausea fades I can cut back a little on the amount I eat.

Yes I worry about how much I eat and what I eat, but at the moment I have to eat what I fancy. If I eat something I don't fancy, it's like my body ignores it and I have to eat something satisfactory for the sick feling to go. Pregnancy is doing weird things to me!

LLKH · 27/07/2010 15:42

Rocklover so the nausea from not eating isn't just me? Thank goodness!

addictedishavingagirl I'm 18+5.

slimyak that's what DH says.

mum2oneloudbaby I actually wasn't that hungry the first trimester except for salad. Ate 3/4 of a lettuce in one sitting once. Now in second trimester I feel like nothing's quite enough.

Thank you all for your responses. That helps immensely!

oh god, eating is the only thing to keep my nausea at bay on the bad days so I'm stuffing myself! 2 hot cross buns when i woke up today followed by a croissant at breakfast! My slimmer self would weep if she could see but fortunately i gobbled her up too as a snack.

i do try to snack on fruit where possible and keep drinking skinny hot chocolate and eating yog for calcium. but jesus sometimes all i want is a big bag of prawn cocktail crisps

catherinewho · 27/07/2010 15:49

I have found that I get hungrier much quicker than before I was pregnant but I can't eat as much in one go so I tend to just eat small things all the time. Constantly nibbling on something also helped the morning sickness at the beginning.

mum2oneloudbaby · 27/07/2010 19:25

And if you think you are eating a lot now if you breastfeed see what happens then!

The weight fell off me last time to the point when my mum said I looked ill and I ate constantly.

jjkm Have always been a cherry tomato scoffer even when not pg. I just want more now. They're so good!

I feel a lot better. Thank you all so much.
