Hi all,

Am 11+4 and have my first scan tomorrow.

Have had my booking in appointment where they gave me a sample bottle and said to bring in a sample each time I come for an appointment. Will this mean including the scan appointment? I haven't provided one at all yet as booking apt was only last week and I've not been in since. I don't know if it is the same people/team who will do the scan and if they will look at me strangely if I try and give them a sample bottle!

So will they be expecting me to take a sample to the scan appointment or just to my 16 week midwife apt?

Just from my previous experience you just need to provide a sample at every midwife appt. I didn't ever provide a sample at my scans - although my bladder was bursting so if they needed one I could have provided one no probs!!

You don't ususally have to take a sample to your scan as you probably won't see anyone other than the sonographer.

You need to go with a full bladder as this gives a clearer picture. The suggestion that's always worked for me is have a wee an hour before your scan time and drink a pint of water, which should give you a full bladder at the time. It's like your first pelvic floor test. Lie there needing to pee and we'll press on you bladder - hold it!

Anyway, as you need to go with a full bladder, if they do need a sample you can provide one as soon as you've had your scan.

Good luck, hope all goes well with your scan tomorrow.

Oh yes, midwives have an obsession with wee. You need to take wee with you everytime you see a midwife.

No, it's a different department. It's the midwife who tests the urine. You won't need one for the sonographer.

I think it's best to go to your scan with a full bladder though(?) - makes it easier to see the baby as far as I remember.

at my scans we also had a quick appointment with a midwife (who wasnt my midwife, just one that happand to be around) to discuss cocerns etc. they did want a sample, buit wanted a 'fresh' sample so it was done after the scan.

if you go with out one and need one, it wont be difficult to do one after the scan when you will be bursting anyway!

I have seen a midwife after each scan and had to provide a sample, but I did it there rather than take one with me. Also each time I see the midwife on her own.

I went to my first scan not having a clue about urine samples. I had my scan, went for a wee, had to wait to see a midwife (they ask a lot of booking questions and take blood samples at that hospital at your first scan) and was then asked for a sample-I just about managed one at the end of the appointment. I was in the hospital for two and a half hours all together. I really don't know if that's normal or not.

Oh and good luck tomorrow and congratulations!

Thanks for all the helpful and lovely replies. Will now not be handing out bottles of wee to any random hospital staff!

Thanks again
