Movement

Hi,

I am 28 weeks pregnant and have been feeling the baby move for about 3 weeks now, and this week they've been very strong and regular especially in the evening. Which has been amazing, and with an anterior placenta we were told we MAY not feel the baby for a long time, if at all.

However, yesterday I didn't feel the baby much at all, a couple of very faint wriggles and kicks and even last night not much. Today I have felt a couple of very faint wriggles if I prod (gently!!) my bump. So baby is moving around, but it's very different to how it has been this last week. Should I be worried or is everything ok?
Thanks.

Sometimes they do have quiet periods where they don't tend to move as much.

If your placenta is anterior you won't feel all of the movements your baby makes. They say that you should feel at least 10 individual movements a day.

You said that you have felt the baby move so I wouldn't worry but you could always make an appt with the midwife to hear the heartbeat for reassurance.

If you feel like the movements have changed and you're worried, call your mw or the labour ward to talk it over, you can decide with them whether you want to be checked. I did this at 26 weeks or so (movements had changed - all was fine though), and the labour ward were happy to have me pop in for a long listen to hb and general check.

As long as you get 10 movement in the day then all should be fine, at this stage baby is settling in to a sleep/waking routine and will have quiet times.
My baby is breech (i'm currently 38wks+6) and i don't seem have the usual kicks etc like i did with dd as she was head down, with this baby at first i was feeling the kicks down low, now they are more shifts from side to side etc, if i don't feel baby move for awhile i give a gentle prod too lol, try having something really cold or some ice and laying on your left side for awhile, babies generally move more when you decide to lay down and relax...night time for instance, or have something sugery as they say it makes the baby move about from the sugar high.

If you are worried though call your midwife and she may be able to come out and see you to put your mind at ease.

always call the midwife or hospital if you are worried, no point in winding yourself if someone can put your mind at ease. I had similar in last pregnancy and after monitoring was told to keep a movement chart and come back if I got less than 10 a day - stickers on the fridge for each movement worked well for us!

coventgarden · 25/07/2010 15:48

Call the midwife if you are worried, it is what they are there for. Maybe work out what gets baby moving and try that?

EmmaKateWH · 25/07/2010 15:58

Eat something sugary, lie on your left side for an hour. If you feel less than ten movements in that time, or you feel ten or more movements but still feel that your baby is not moving as you would expect it to, go to hospital for a check up. Good luck. I am sure the baby is fine. Mine sometimes has a few days of being very rowdy and wiggling like mad, followed by a quieter day which always makes me worry, but the sugar plus lying on left side usually gets her moving again.

I had exactly the same happen two weeks ago (at 24 +3 with twins). I rang the midwife, who came out to listen to the heatbeats and then refered me for a scan when she wasn't sure whether she could hear one heart or two.

Scan showed two wriggly babies, I just couldn't feel them because they'd both turned in towards each other and were kicking at each other and my anterior placentas. I now have days where I only feel faint wriggles and days where I can see proper kicks

If you're worried I'd give your midwife a call. Hearing the heartbeat might be enough to reasuure you, or she may send you for a scan.

The midwife told my daughter that even towards the end,you should still get at least 10 good kicks, and that when people say oh there isnt much room and they quieten down, this isnt true, you should still get some movement.

but because of the way your baby is,i wouldnt be too worried but would still pop down, and check it out,my last baby i remember i didnt feel it all morning and went to the hospital, and as soon as they put the monitor on me he kicked,i had to press a little buzzer each time he kicked and they monitored it,it really reassured me,and they dont mind, thats what they are there for.good luck x

Thankyou so much for all your replies. I phoned the hospital and they asked me to pop in and be checked over. The heartbeat was heard and monitored and they could hear lots of movement, though I couldn't feel any. Then after a couple of glasses of iced water I felt a few kicks. Still not as powerful as before but the midwives feel that baby has wriggled behind the placenta and has simply found a comfy spot there! Still not feeling a great deal but the midwives were happy. Apparently it is common practice to go in and be re-checked the following day after a check-up so I will be going in tomorrow.

Thanks again for all you kind words.

Really glad I found this post as I have an anterior placenta too and have been worrying about not feeling much.

Having not done this before, can you just go in to your hospital and ask to be scanned or is it best to call and do you need an appointment?

Which ward would you need to contact?

Sorry for ignorance!

Wanderingsheep · 26/07/2010 13:26

Oh glad all is well, NoTeaForMe! It's bizarre when they can hear the movement but you can't feel it, isn't it?! I remember having a 4d scan at 26 weeks. The sonographer struggled, at first, to get a good image of DD as she was moving too much but I couldn't feel her! I also had an anterior placenta.

Daisystone, I would just give the MW a ring and they will probably just tell you to go in.

coventgarden · 26/07/2010 15:34

That is really interesting about going back in to be checked the day after an initial check up.

I was sent home when my baby was in trouble and only was seen the next day because I already had a scan booked. Otherwise I would have lost my first baby.
