backache - what can I do?

I'm now 21 weeks and over the last few days have been getting really quite painful backache - affecting one side of my lower back and round into the groin. I imagine its just related to the ligaments relaxing - I've had slight twinges right from the word go - but it is now causing serious bother and I'm very worried how I'm going to cope with another 20 weeks to go!
I don't know whether to rest or to exercise - if resting, what is the best position (sitting and lying both seem to make it worse); if exercise, how can I make sure I don't do further damage? (walking sometimes feels worse, sometimes better; would swimming help, or should I try some gentle back/stomach exercises?). Main problem is that I can't really function without sitting for long periods (at work) or walking (25 minutes each way pushing ds) - plus I really don't want to be reduced to a state of vegetative inactivity, its really not my style and I have too much to do!!
I'm going to see the midwife next week but tbh not convinced she'll be much help - but will see if there is any physio available.
Sorry for the long whinge - any advice or tips greatly welcome!

How are you when you turn over in bed, is it better to keep you legs together? If its hurting when walking and in your groin then it maybe SPD, not a 'normal' backache. Look here for some further info. Either way you really should see a physio.

Thanks pie - can you do the link again as it is putting me through to the 'cutting edge' thread?
Feel bad about moaning when I know you've been suffering a lot.

I THINK (hope!) it isn't SPD as it all started round at the back in the sacro-iliac joints, and doesn't seem to fit the typical SPD description (though there may be an element of that as I suspect it is the whole pelvis that has got rather unstable!)

Elliot, I tto thought it was just the sacro-iliac joints as that is where I feel most of the pain and the pain began there, but it's just the weak spot in my pelvis.

Sorry about that link!!!

what???

I don't want it to be SPD, that's what!! But from reading through the stuff on the website, think I may have to concede that it probably is...
