Sorry if this has been done before, but does anyone know what the current advice is on dying hair in pregnancy? I'm 5 weeks and have an appointment Wed for regrowth, my hairdresser uses permanent hair colour. Is there any risk to the unborn?

TIA,

hard to say, when i asked my midwife, she said there was no evidence to suggest that it does any harm, but they suggest avoiding it in the first 12 weeks, just in case.i dyed my hair monthly all the way through my first 2 pregs and my dc's were fine.

There's no proven link between using permanent hair dye and foetal abnormalities, some midwives and health professionals advise against it though.

My opinion is you have to avoid so many things in pregnancy (a new one every week it seems) without having horrendous roots. I coloured my hair every 6-8 weeks throughout my pregnancy with DD and again with this one. I thought the risk of chemicals getting to the foetus through the scalp every 6-8 weeks was v small, probably exposed to more chemicals in the food I'm eating and air I'm breathing every day.

i was told it was ok but they did mine with the cap so that the colour didnt come into direct contact

My sister is a hairdresser and refused to do mine whilst i was pregnant. Although right towards the end i was getting desperate, so she did it, but made sure the dye went no where near my scalp. She told me that the contact with the scalp can get through to baby, and increase the chance of the child having birth marks.

Don't know if this is true, but it scared me enough not to do it. Perhaps she just couldn't be arsed to do my hair?

Who knows. This is my sister who told me this, who's a hairdresser. She didn't seem to be winding me up as looked pretty serious about it, but maybe someone was winding her up. Not sure, but i believed her of course, and was going round with 'natural' highlights for 8 months of my pregnancy. But then, i'll believe anything me. When you're pregnant for the first time, and people tell you not to do something you believe them

Hiya! im a hairdresser, and when i was pregnant with my first baby, i was a sod for dying my hair ALL the time!! all in all i must have dyed my hair about 15 times while i was pregnant with him and he is totally fine, he was a healthy 9lb 14oz and not a single mark on him!
Although i would say the amount of colour i used was possibly quite excessive, i think the occasional hair dye to treat yourself is ok, if you can though i would avoid it in the first 12 weeks as beanies are so small and still developing! The problem (if there is one) is the contact the dye makes with your skin, so no contact with skin, for example - highlights, than no problem! if its not highlights, then just try and minimize the amount of contact the dye actually makes with the skin if it makes you feel better, but im sure the risks if any must be small if colour is used as little as possible.

The advice I had and followed was:

The only risk from having your hair dyed is that you might throw up cos of the horrible smell as they're doing it (but then, the same could be said for the cup of coffee they give you!). However, the risk of not having your hair dyed while pregnant is that the baby has a crabby Mum who isn't happy with her hair.

Oh, and I assure you that you will be looking at the photo of you and the baby in the delivery room forever more, so you should have your hair how you want it!

I had highlights throughout, and was just told that you must tell the hairdresser you're pregnant as the hair can react differently.
