Hi, this is my first time trying for a baby, I am at the end of my ovulation period and have an ache right in the centre of my stomach, I've had this for a couple of days. Could it be an early sympton or from trying to conceive too much?? a bit confused

I used to get that ache when af due. Best thing to do is stay calm and wait until you can do a pg test. I'm now 6wks and still no symptoms of being pregnant...with DS it was 9wks in before I felt any symptom.

thank you wanna it's hard to wait, but trying to be patient. Ache is now much lower??? what symptoms did you start to get with yours??

It's probably too early for pg symptoms if you're only at the end of your ovulation period. Most people don't get symptoms as such until they're about 6 weeks pg (about 4 weeks from now for you) although some say they 'feel' different straight away. Try not to get too wound up about every little twinge you get when you're ttc, though; it'll drive you round the bend! Good luck.

I've been round the bend for years so nothing new there.... aches have gone so think must of been down to anxiety. I'm learning to take everything in my stride I'll keep you posted if they were symptons or not!!

Do you mean during your ovulation? If so, it could be 'mittelsmertz' - a pain some women get associated with ovulation.

Claireabelle · 25/08/2005 15:40

Mittlesmertz?? is that a made up name?? maybe they are ovulating pains. Talking of ovulation I thought I knew when I was ovulating but I've been told so many different ways to work it out; day 9 / 10 of my cycle from the nurse at my doctors, my doctor said 14 days back from the end of my cycle and then 5 days back from that is my ovulation period and then various website say day 19 - 24 of my cycle. Which means I'm confused any suggestions??

No honestly! Type it into google and see what you get. It does mean an ovulation pain (literally 'mid cycle' I think).

When you ovulate depends on your cycle and you can only really tell retrospectively unless you are absolutely regular. Your doctor is right - it doesn't matter how long your cyle is, ovulation would always be 14-16 before your period starts - you 'luteal phase'. The best way to predict ovulation is to check your cervical mucus (stick a finger in, girl!) it is clear and slippery (like egg-white) when you are most fertile. As long as you have sex every 2 days you should be ok!

Claireabelle · 25/08/2005 16:44

Thanks Rachey1969! you seem to be a fountain of knowledge I take it you've done it all before??

Hi Claireabelle

Just wanted to correct Rachey (hope you don't mind Rachey), but your luteal phase doesn't have to be 14-16 days. Although it is most commonly around 14, the 'normal' range is classed as anywhere from 10 to 16 days. It can, however, still be longer or shorter than that, but if it is much shorter then is is classed as a 'luteal phase defect', which may make it harder to conceive.

I'd recommend that you take a look at the fertility friend website, as it has loads of really useful info about ttc.

Claireabelle · 26/08/2005 11:34

Hi Tabs,
thanks have had a look at the website it also says around day 9/10 of my cycle. Feel I'm much clearer thank you everyone. If I aim ( or my fella more importantly) for day 9 -16 of my cycle I'm hoping I'm in with a chance. I'll let you all know!

Actually - can I just disagree that you don't tend to get symptoms until 6 weeks. I've had symptoms very quickly with all four conceptions: the first time I got pregnant, I had a mild stomach upset, dizziness, low blood pressure... so I did a Boots test at nine days post ovulation and got a faint positive, with a darker positive two days later. A couple of times I've got pregnant, I've had the strangest feeling around ten days after ovulation where it feels as though someone has stuck their finger in my navel and wiggled it about. I've known exactly when ovulation has occurred as I've been charting each time. I also find that my most 'egg-white' mucus doesn't occur on the day of ovulation itself, but about two days before. Ovulation is then determined by a spike in my basal temperature.

I appreciate that a lot of people won't experience symptoms that quickly - and it is easy to imagine symptoms around the time that implantation might be occurring.

Tabs - you may well be right, I'm more of an expert on the practice rather than the theory! I used natural family planning methods for about five years and was extremely successful at getting pregnant 3 times exactly when I wanted to and at not getting pregnant the rest of the time! I did temp to start with but mainly used the billings method (checking cervical mucus). I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNLESS YOU ARE IN A STABLE RELATIONSHIP AND WOULDN'T MIND IF YOU DID GET PREGNANT! With dd I only waited 2 days (rather than 3) after peak fertile mucus and er got dd... a month earlier than I had planned but hey, no big deal.

Before this my fourth pregnancy, I had been using the mirena coil (abstinence wears a bit... ) I got pregnant straight away after the coil was taken out, it took me rather by surprise cos I was actively looking for fertile mucus and never found any. Despite this I am now 21 weeks so it shows that you that peak CM is not essential for conception.

Good luck!
