Would like to meet other first time mums

I am in my 30s and live in Streatham. I have friends and family that have had NCT classes. Some have thought we great some were not so impressed. My husband and I have and thought long and hard about if we should or should not have NCT classes. After much deliberation we have decided not to have them. I would like to know from other mums and mums to be where I would be able to socialise with other first time mums as we will not be attending the NCT classes.
HELP

Have you had a look at MN local? If you put a message up on youur local site I'm sure someone will contact you and point you in the right direction.

Hi streatmama I don't live too far from streatham, am in Sydenham which in the car is very little distance. My husband and I are also not attending any nct classes but will be attending antenatal classes that the hospital offers. Also a first time mum and not sure how to meet others like me!!! How far along are you?

streatmama · 22/07/2010 18:57

Hi scgd. I am 16 weeks now and looking really huge. I even think I felt the baby more today. How far gone are you?

Am 31+5 now but like you, have looked huge very early on, since about week 14! Think I was suffering from bloating from week 10, therefore have been in stretchy jeans from what feels like the beginning! I felt our baby move at exactly week 18, though wasn't really sure, it felt like bubbles popping inside but I was expecting it to feel like fluttering like I kept reading. You'll know your body though and what isn't the norm for you and then can blame it on the bubba! Are you having it at st george's? It's so exciting when you start feeling your baby move, after the first scan it makes it feel even more real doesn't it?!

its also my first time and im 39+2. due on the 28th july can't wait!

hi, I'm in Tooting, first time and 18 weeks today. As far as I can see the best place is that cafe on Tooting common! Mummy central.

I have signed up to NCT classes but St George's and Chelsea and Westminster do classes too?

Hello Streatmama
First time and 24 weeks.
I've found that my aqua natal class is a brilliant place to meet other first time mums - you do a bit of exercise but a lot of chatting!

arabellaandbaby · 23/07/2010 13:38

Try your local Surestart Children's Centre. You can start going whilst you are expecting a little one. These centres are all around the country. Great for all sorts of activities such as classes for labour breathing and relaxation, introduction to breastfeeding, etc. Once Babbie arrives, you can then attend baby massage, yoga, post pregnancy aerobics, baby playgroups etc. and the large majority of mums are first-timers. I'm loving my time at my centre. I go 3-4 times a week and have made many new friends. Try it out.

Hello Ladies
Wow thank u all so much advice. I will look in to all the above-mentioned info and go on to make meet lots of mums. I have not been to any cafes or even any exercise clubs so will look into the yoga and the aqua stuff. I first have to ask my midwife if I can do any of the keep stuff as I have had miscarriages in the past. But thanks again.
I hope you are all felling great and still enjoying being pregnant. I am even though I can no longer sleep on my tummy?..

Hi ladies

I'm 31 weeks pregnant with my first and I live in Streatham too - always happy to meet other mummies to be (or new mums!)

Streatmama - when you're a bit further on in your pregnancy you might want to check out the anti-natal classes at the Gracefield Gardens health centre. They're run as drop in sessions so you don't need to book - 2pm every Friday. I've been going to them and they're great! Apparently they do a baby group there as well for new mums.

Hope that helps

Fibilou · 24/07/2010 21:28

Have you tried your local Surestart centre ? It's a good way to meet other mums - also there will be a postnatal group for women that have their babies around the same time

KKirby · 25/07/2010 18:38

Hi ladies,

I'm also living around tooting and i'm a first time mum at 17 weeks. Does anyone know of any aqua natal classes in the area. I am planning on starting yoga this week but would also like to attend an aquanatel class if any one knows of any around the area

AliKatt · 31/07/2010 13:11

Just checking back to see if anyone's still around!

KKirby There's an aqua-natal class in Brixton. I got some info about it my booking appointment (quite a while back now!) but I can't seem to find it... sorry that's not much help!

streatmama · 03/08/2010 12:39

Hi Alikatt
How did you find the anti-natal classes at the Gracefield Gardens health centre, are they good?
I don't live to far from there.
How far are you now and how are you getting on?

The Gracefield Gardens ante-natal classes are good, very busy (good for meeting other mums) and the midwives are lovely - we've had quite a laugh over the last few weeks! Our last one is this Friday I'd recommend them - worth giving the health centre a call to find out when the next course is starting because I think a couple of the midwives are leaving (on is going on mat leave herself) so not sure if they'll run straight after this course finishes.

I'm 32 + 4 and starting to get massive and a bit slow now! Other than that, all good

You must be about 18 weeks now, is that right? Are you getting a noticable bump yet?

Ameliamain · 12/08/2010 17:47

hi im Louise im 24 and live in middlesbrough and i find it hard to make friends id like to meet mums of any age in the north east x x x

lovely74 · 12/08/2010 17:53

Definitely your Childrens Centre. I have a great group of mummy friends from attending the groups there. As far as NCT goes you could just become a member and attend the pre / post natal coffee mornings (not even sure if you need to be a member actually). I did the classes but some of my friends are from these activities too.

Put yourself out there! Even in the really early weeks groups such as breast feeding support can be great to find other in the same situation as you and to get support from each other.

Good luck Smile

Hello streatmama and other pregnant ladies. I am 15 weeks (due in early March). I live locally in Streatham and would be keen to meet up with other mums to be. The Tooting Bec Cafe is always good for a bacon butty and a latte. Anyone out there interested then let me know.
