xray during pregnancy

I've done something to my foot,

GP thinks it's joint strain due to relaxin, but I'm not convinced.

I'm 31+5 - what are the chances of being able to get an xray taken??

They should be able to x-ray your foot whilst screening the rest of you - it would be normal to do so anyway.

Some info here:

I had one last week at 30 weeks. They have a very direct laser, and put you in a lead vest. They also explained that it's really only in the early stages it's a problem, the premature babies that come out much earlier than 30 weeks often get x-rayed every day with the laser and that's pointed directly at them. They'll probably get you to stick your foot out away from your body, but still protect the bump just in case.
Hope your foot feels better soon!

I had a chest x-ray and a CT scan whilst pregnant. I was told that they do avoid doing them unless there is a good reason to, but I had absolutely no reason to worry. They used several 'vest' type things to shield my bump.

As has bee said, they also x-ray premature babies often, as they need to check ventialtion tubes are correctly in place, check for chest infections etc.

I had a foot xray done at 28 weeks.

I potentially had a shred of glass in my foot. Doctor at A&E said ok to have foot xray at 28 weeks.

When we got to the xray room there were 3 different lead aprons and I put them all on including putting one between my legs when I lay down. I could hardly move.

The fact you are pregnant won't be an issue for getting your x-ray but are you sure you need one? Has your GP written you a card out? Cos if not you'd need to go to A and E and if it is something your GP thinks is a strain it doesn't sound likely to be serious enough for a visit to A and E.

Remember that strains and sprains can be very very painful and take a long time to heal so don't think that because your GP doesnt think it is broken means they dont think you have injured it. It is always best to avoid X-rays where poss whether pregnant or not.

Hope it gets better soon, take it easy. xx

Thanks for all your posts.

I did go up to A&E but only because my foot has suddenly swelled a bit too much for my (and DH's) liking over the past 36 hours (swelled more whilst waiting too! ).

I did get an xray (4 actually) taken, but there is nothing there (an xray specialist will take deeper looks in the week to see if there's something small but otherwise not too worried about it). They checked for clots too, but nothing. And it's not a sprain either .

They're thinking it might be beginnings of rheumatoid arthritis (sp?) as I have had problems with my hands for 3+ years, and my hip has flared up in the past 9 months inexplicably.

So I have to go back for physio in 10 days to see how my foot has/hasn't improved.
